Hey Guys, Figure i'd go to these as cars for my F40PH-2CAT. I'll be replacing the Horizons I have with these over time. Anyway latest project, AMT Montreal Bombardier Multilevel, practically the same cars NJ Transit has with some minor spec differences. One being two Nathan K5LAs which I have already installed, and another is sanding down the trap door in the back. This'll be my third or fourth Island Modelworks build. Will *Attempt to* paint the body artwork by hand Prototype Picture:

You can't paint this by hand. At least use a rattle can, or do it at the club next time you're back in Queens.

Looks like you still need to clean the casting by the windows, you will tear up a few X-acto blades in the process, take it easy.

Should've elaborated on that, I'm going to use a rattle can and I'm going to paint it properly first with primer, then a coat of metallic silver, grey for the pilot, and then blue. Then ever slightly attempt that body wave with the new AMT design By hand. Or try so masking methods... Either way it's a bit challenging.

That photo is good enough to use in photoshop. I'd suggest either making a decal in photoshop or using it to cut a template. A draftsman's French curve will help you get a good edge for trimming with a knife. www.amazon.com/Alvin-Co-FC88-FRENCH-CURVE/dp/B000HEQNFA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1426727327&sr=8-1&keywords=french+curveAlso, my IMW kit has a lot of scratches and knife gouges cast into the resin. Check carefully under strong light from multiple angles. It's been taking quite a bit of work to clean the shell up, but it's worth it. As far as paint, have you thought of playing with Allclad to get a good stainless finish?

Deandremouse, take slowfreights advice and do not paint the AMT design by hand. Those IMW cars take a lot of work and are not cheap, don't spend all of that time and money and then settle for a less-than paint job. It is complex design, but take the time to get it right! It may require more work and may be more frustrating up-front, but you will be happy that you did it.
It would recommend making custom decals. Micromark has a pretty good kit that I have used in the past. At the very least, get some sticker paper from staples and print it on there. The design would come out looking right, and you could always peel it off and apply decals later if you wanted.

I'm going to second what acelaphillies said, and suggest you see about custom decals for that design. I've experimented with masking complex patterns like that before (although only in one colour, not three!), and I would strongly recommend decals instead. You'll save yourself a LOT of work, and the results will almost certainly be better as it's very difficult to get a pattern like that exact even with careful masking - especially when you have to do it on both sides of the car.
If you're planning on doing more than one of these (which it sounds like you are), the decals will be a very good investment.
With a couple of good side-on shots like the one you posted above, along with some basic measurements, it should be easy to get someone to do them up for you (Highball maybe?).

You will be better off creating a custom decal,if you making more then 1 car, make a couple of extras to allow for "mistakes" If you have access to a BBD catalog sheet with the known measurements that will help the decal size measurements. You can buy blank white and clear decal sheets at local Hobby shop or Hobby Lobby.

Your work is rapidly improving. The color separations need a bit more touch-up, particularly on the black detail painting.
As you progress, you may even want to cut off some of those molded-on details and replace them with something free-standing.

I have details west HEP Cables and and DA Receptacles I'll throw on sometime in the future the logo I'm working on as much as I straighten it in Photoshop looks distorted. There's a Microsoft Train simulator skin I could possibly use to help. Or ask someone in Montreal to get a straight photo of a side of a car ....

Have you test run the car yet? You are at the point where the model is 75% done,it would be a good time to check how it runs on the track and thru switches before you put the final touches on. If you need to tweak it for truck clearance issues,or to add weight, etc this is the times to do it.

The proto photo above isn't the complete logo, but it's sure straight-on...how much can you do using that as a reference? And how much can you sucker Diesel into doing the graphics work for you
