I've been working on a number of VIA projects lately and have been meaning to post something about them here, so I'll start off with one that I'm in the middle of right now.
As a VIA Corridor modeller in the relatively modern era, there are basically 3 locomotives I need to cover: the F40PH-2D, the P42, and the LRC. Sure, the LRC and P42 never co-existed (as one replaced the other), but in my world a few LRCs will stick around Of those locomotives, Rapido has covered the F40 and LRC (just need some weathering and the odd special paint job), while the P42 has yet to be done really really well.
Athearn's recent P42 release is probably overall the best model out there. The Kato has a host of issues, including weird proportions, that funky truck-mounted motor system, and an awful rendition of the radiator air intakes. Plus it's the Amtrak "bolt-o-nose" style, which doesn't work for VIA. The Overland version, while nice in some ways, has some weird dimensions and awful grills, along with being prohibitively expensive and hard to find.
Athearn's most recent release improves on their past P42 offerings, including upgrading to etched metal wipers and mirrors, a better horn, and a proper 2-piece windshield. They also improved the tooling around the headlight area, and these days have a somewhat better drive (compared to what they used to have). Plus, they were offered in VIA's more contemporary blue P42 scheme through a custom run between George's Trains and another distributor. I picked up 3 of these, with the goal of turning them into really stellar models.
Here's the basic list of things to do, starting with the factory painted VIA unit:
-Remove moulded on radiator air intake grills and replace with S&S Hobby Products etched metal grills
-Add extra headlight below the numberboard
-Remove the printed gasket around the windshields (the VIA models had an oversized one printed on that just looks weird)
-Repaint handrails grey, instead of white
-Remove the engineer's side HEP plug and relocate behind plow
-Fill the rear sandfiller hatches
-Add second sinclair antenna on roof
-Add forward mounted emergency horn
-Add underbody piping and details, including modern VIA-style air filter dryer
-Repaint underbody in darker grey
-Paint wipers black
-Add all pilot details
-Add lenses in all lights
-Install Loksound decoder and replace all lights with LEDs
-Weather for in-service look
I think that's everything that needs to be done. I've finished a few things, and should be completing the rest in the coming days, so I'll update this as I go.
For the time being, here's a shot of the new grills, installed and masked off ready for paint:
