In reality, they couldn't ever be rigged for HEP..the cabling wasn't up to spec. Oops. You can run them with an F40 in phase III and Superliners (such consists did happen, with the SDP leading). The CAD illustrations shows both Amtrak noses, actually. The smaller, inset photo shows the phase II model. The F40C has HEP, and would be a fairly straight forward bash... The stainless side panels of the F40C are not a very straightforward bash, even though the SDP40F gives a pretty good core. Onequicknova and I decided that etchings would be the key to getting an F40C done. But they also went through two major updates I know of. The first replaced the battery box doors, and the second removed the stainless side panels from the rear.

Athearn hasn't posted anything more about this yet, though there was apparently a sample at the show.
Part two of MR's show report says this:
"Electro-Motive Division SDP40F diesel locomotive. Amtrak. Twin steam generators, flat- and peaked-nose versions, low-profile roof details, illuminated Gyralight and emergency light, detailed cab interior, and Leslie S4T and SL4T air horns. Direct-current models and models with dual-mode SoundTraxx Tsunami2 decoders will be offered. Additional features, release date, and pricing to be announced. Genesis series. Athearn Train"

Since my whole fleet is HEP and Amtrak is sort of a distraction for me, I wanted an SDP40F but couldn't figure out how to justify it. I have now figured out what I would do...yet another variation of the Valpo Dummy: CUS--open platforms by Lance, on Flickr Consist was SDP40F-Amfleet-Amfleet-P30CH. I have the 2 Amfleets, and we'll just not talk about the stupid cash I'd be sinking into this train...

Those are some beautiful shots! The Pooch is a sweet looking unit as well.
Any updates from Athearn? It's been a while now.

Other then the original announcements; nothing. There're still some ripples with container shipping due to the Hanjin bankruptcy.

Wonder if they'll do 630 or 631...those were the two regulars in phase III paint in Chicago.

Found an even stranger consist. This one features a one-of-a-kind ex-C&NW bilevel (can't remember what its layout was)...any guess what train this is? Amtrak SDP40F 645 by Chuck Zeiler, on Flickr

Valpo Dummy?? Or a Hiawatha Shuttle? Note the HEP cable hanging under the "porch" of 645.

Not the Badger or Nicolett--this is the wrong side of Union Station to go to Milwaukee. Possibly the Dummy or the Illini. That first car is ex-CNW 903, the only coach-bar bilevel built.

Since the SDP40F's were traded to ATSF for CF-7's and SW-1200m's(SBB-1200's),will allow some discussion of what ATSF did modding them for freight service, after all it's possible 1 of those units had to pull relief duty on the SW Chief as the then aging F40PH's started having road failures, the leased GP-40's were just coming online

It's official! www.athearn.com/newsletter/022417/01_GEN_SDP40F_030317.pdfAmtrak flat nose (in Phase 1) and Santa Fe rebuild in this run, 4 numbers for each. Sound versions use Tsunami 2, and one of the most surprising details (for Athearn anyway) is this line: "LEDs for realistic appearance" - now there's a change that's been a long time coming... Amazingly these are ETA July 2017 (yes, this July), so they must be into production already.

The current "Factory decoder" is a Tsunmai II with 2 speakers,ESU/Loksound is working on a decoder using their files from the Kato N scale version as a starting point. Not sure if that is a factory or aftermarket setup.
