I am digging up an old topic here, but I was thinking the other day, I wonder if anyone has ever considered metalizing an Acela? It would be an interesting project for sure. One would need custom decals to do the repaint as well.
The carbodies on the Acela are pretty much all stainless steel, but does anyone know about the power cars? It seems to me from looking at pictures that the front of the nose may actually be platinum mist and the side of the body is stainless steel.
Just something neat to think about.

That sounds about right from my experience. This picture shows that the front and the shrouds appear to be painted, while the side pannels are Stainless. The main challenge would be getting the decals.

Good pictures that shows this effect! I feel like if someone tried to replicate this in HO scale they would have a hard time doing it without making it look unrealistic. It would definitely be a balancing act between the stainless steel and the silver paint because in real life they are not too far off from each other. If you had too much contrast it would look bad.
Are the HHP-8's all platinum mist?

Believe there was some stainless on the Hippo carbodies, they were based off the Acela Power cars with some changes including the 2nd cab and nose piece

It is so weird to see the HHP-8 referred to in past tense. Correct, but weird nonetheless.

Believe the last runs of Amtrak's Hippo's was Sept-Oct of last year('14),then stored pans down and locked at Wilmington De shop. Sooner or later they will be returned to BBD when the lease expires! Unknown if 1 HHP-8 will be sent to RMPA at Strasburg along with an AEM-7(DC or REMAN)

HHP-8 sides were stainless, only front end and small section on top had silver paint. AEM-7 901 has been set aside from the other deadline engines at Wilmington for some time I believe it is going to be preserved.
