I noticed that. And the doorways were enlarged when traps were added to make the Comet I's look very much like II's. But I've found a few photos showing the odd Comet I mixed in prior to the doors being changed. I haven't found any still in DoT paint. But now I'm pondering how to simulate the ghosted red pinstripe. Not the best view, but visible here: www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=108766&nseq=196These cars also look more silver/white than aluminum. The crappy factory silver has to go.

That U34CH shows the "quickie" patch to NJT,Depending on the mix of chem used in the car wash, had a way turning the car sldes in to a "white" looking finish, sort of the same problem that Amtrak's Horizen fleet and the Delorian had(Brushed metal finishes)

Full coaches had Safety chains,A end cab car had the end door,Comet II/Shoreliner I(MN) as I remember it,rarely,a set might have run with out a cabcar, or if the set was ran around due to a bad cab car,the last car's vestibule open to weather, inner door was locked, not used.

The ConnDOT order of Comet II's/Shoreliner I's was close behind NJT's order to BBD, and followed the 4 Chrome Crankshaft Fl-9's rebuilds, there was a plan to rebuild the "best" of the ex-NH 4400 MU's into loco hauled coaches, around the time of the NJT order, which was thankfully veto'd. Since the 2 thru Danbury/GCT trains ran with the 2 FL-9's back to back, the crews never used the doors on the coach's"B" end next to the units since that vestibule was open to the weather.
Not too long later 4-6 4400 MU's were reactivated for New Canaan Branch service during off peak times, stripping parts off the deadlined MU's to keep'em running(Yep,they had PCB oil in their main transformer) they also lost their 3rd rail gear as well

As luck would have it, I had to go to EWR this week. And, as luck would again have it, the next train was all Comet III. I got plenty of good vestibule pics before the conductor threw me into the car.

Luck is with me again. When I pulled the floor from the Comet IIs, they have bulkhead walls with doors inside to make vestibules. Even better, the end doors just pop off the end of the shell with no effort at all.
For the IMW Comet I, I'll use a pair of salvaged end doors. Since I can keep the car in the middle of the train, I'm not as worried about it as I am the Comet II.
As I work through cleaning up the shell, I discovered that the IMW car is a few inches shorter than the Comet II...is this correct? I'm starting to find some of the inaccuracies, but I think just removing the blemishes is going to make the car much more realistic.

I wonder if NJT has it's own Historical group? You might want to poke around the UHRS website They just moved their U-34ch around.

Back in the old daze, I'd visit the hobby shop and dig through the wall of detail parts to find what I needed or could modify. I don't have access to one anymore, and the Walthers catalog is terrible for help. I need something to represent the marker lights on the ends of this car: www.sterlingrail.com/images/3038_5.jpgIt looks like a ditch light could be adapted. Or maybe there's a marker light out there. Looking for suggestions that are close. I will be fine with adding a red jewel instead of making them work. FWIW, this is for an NJT Comet I.

You might try the following,Detail West,#235-229 GE ditch lights($2.95),or #235-162 E/F unit backup light($1.00) Take the jewel to a store that carries Plastruct or K+S tubing and match the tube to the jewel size, a couple of tubes could cover the whole fleet!

Yeah, your best bet is using some brass or plastic tube and setting the marker lense inside it. No one really makes the appropriate markers for commuter cars or locomotives.

I am making limited progress on the underframes for the 4 Comet II cars, but the IMW Comet I is really starting to irritate me. True to IMW form, the dimensions are off enough that I'm challenged to make it blend in with a consist. The car is a little short in length, which can be ignored. But if you line up the roof lines, the floors and step wells don't match. If you line up the floors, the roofs are close but the step wells are clearly different. I have to figure out how to best split the difference. At this point, it's sheer stubbornness to see if I can turn the car into something decent that keeps me going. I'll try to make myself post pics soon enough.
