I'm surprised noones mentioned Nippon Sharyo bi level coaches. I dunno I was watching Caltrain vids and I thought they looked pretty neat flying through the Bay Area

Nippon Sharyo is the builder of Gallery cars, and are the builder of record for the 3rd gen Surfliners for Ca and the combined state owned Midwest fleet of cars. At present that car order is delayed due to a failed "crush test" of the prototype bodyshells. They are in the redesign process for now.

I'm surprised noones mentioned Nippon Sharyo bi level coaches. I dunno I was watching Caltrain vids and I thought they looked pretty neat flying through the Bay Area Since 1985, bilevels have come from Nippon Sharyo, Amerail, and Super Steel. I know that window configurations vary between the builds, and I don't know if all shells were rolled by the same plant. Since similar cars run in San Francisco, Chicago, and DC, the key would be to pick a variation that ran in all 3 cities...if there is such an animal. But they wouldn't do me much good...with my era I can really only use the Budd version that was first built for Milwaukee Road in the late 60's.

Caltrain(ex-SP)is the west coast user of gallery cars,SP had replaced some of the Harriman cars with Gallery cars "cloned" from the Chicago designed cars, after the Joint Powers Board(JPBX)takeover the mixed bag of ex SP Galleries and the "Boise Budds" fleets were sold off as new cars went online, the Galleries went to Co Railcar for the stillborn "Marboro" Train, then "remaned" for use by the cruise lines in Alaska. The "Boise Budds" are running miles on the Grand Canyon RY with Domes and other Heritage Fleet cars bought from Amtrak. Also there's a fleet of ex SP Harrimans at the Grand Canyon Ry still in use. Caltrain also uses the BBD "sausage" bi-levels for the "Baby Bullet" express services to San Jose. The "Boise Budds" were ex-B&M Budd cars rebuilt into HEP coaches for the MBTA.

Here's another "out in left field" idea, this is for walters or Jason at Rapido,a run of "Boise Budds" in MBTA and Caltrain(CaDOT era)schemes, the only major mod is the removal of the roof rad blister, the minor change would be the "Blanking" of the windows where the controls were. Here's an idea for anybody with a "fleet" of Athearn "Rubber Band" drive RDC's, B&M,back in the early days of the MBTA,as the RDC's wore out their drive trains, disconnected the drive shafts, turn them into loco hauled coaches, with 1 or both Detroit Diesel motors used for lights, heat, and AC needs.

Cool!! As passenger and commuter modelers, we like to think that the model modern passenger/commuter scene is larger than might meet the eye, but this release will tell a lot. The IVb (the most current) and the Phase III (1980's) Amfleets were reportedly the hottest sellers for Walthers. There is a proven market for the modern Amtrak passenger equipment, the question is will there be a big market for modern commuter equipment? I think (and hope) yes. I think that NJT is one of the most popular commuter roads, and the popularity is only growing with the younger generations. I am however surprised that Atlas did not go with a safer bet: the Comet commuter cars. Although a basic version was made by Walthers years ago, they are used on more roads. Also, the all electric ALP-46 is more common on the NJT roster. However, I bet Atlas chose the dual-mode so that it appeals to people that model non-electrified lines. Also, the ALP-45 is also used in Canada on AMT (Montreal). Plus it has the novelty of being a dual mode. I think the Multilevel cars will be good sellers, and they are also used on AMT and MARC (Maryland/Baltimore). Many are also expecting SEPTA (Philadelphia) to purchase these cars soon. A few closing notes: I fully see this as a pilot run. If these sell well, I think Atlas will go after more modern commuter equipment. Did anyone else see the note that says, "Series #1-NJ TRANSIT" on the first page of the Guide to Atlas HO Scale Modern Commuter Trains? Also, they are listed as being expected 4th Quarter 2016. Can this be trusted at all?? I am still waiting for my AEM-7 that was announced in 2014!! This new train better not come first! Anyway, thanks Atlas for representing your hometown roads! I hope they sell well, and I hope to see more modern commuter equipment!

Hey,
has anyone gotten the new 8600s from Rapido yet? They're beautiful looking cars. I'm looking forward to the unskirted version as these are the units I saw as a kid.

I am still waiting for the Penn Central ones to hit stores so I don't personally have any. I have had a close up of the New Haven schemed cars and they are absolutely awesome. The detail is spot on and the lighting is even to scale brightness. A bit pricey at around $90 each but still a great model.

Rapido has started on the Parlor/Lounge cars that match the 8600 coaches, with help from the New Haven historical group, and the EP-5(E-40)motor,aka the "Jet".

Hey, has anyone gotten the new 8600s from Rapido yet? They're beautiful looking cars. I'm looking forward to the unskirted version as these are the units I saw as a kid. I ordered 2 NH from MB Klein and they arrived just a couple of days ago. Jason hit a home run with these cars. I have to grab 2-3 more before they completely disappear. I'm glad the Penn Central cars are delayed, so I can save up to grab a few of those also. And now I hear they are doing the matching Parlor cars and an EP-5? That announcement made my weekend as I always wanted an EP-5 but not wanting to pay over $1000 for one. I wonder how many brass OMI brass EP-5 locomotives are going to pop up on eBay when the word gets out.

I don't think there are any/many Reading Blueliners in ho yet, that'd be cool to see.
