Normally, using a tiny blade screwdriver, lift the back of the shell and ladders away from the frame, then do the same at the front, carefully! Might be a good idea to invest in some spare parts,Part #36501,Handrails,#36510 sideframe kit, # 36530 windshield "glass" and lens set,and # 36580 the "Accessory sprue",that covers the ladders and underframe parts. Had a run of bad sideframe pins, and needed some replacements (pin broke off at sideframe when removing them off the truck to add the parts and paint them ) Check the Horizen and Athearn sites for prices,or just write(or e-mail)and ask if the parts are avaible to replace damaged parts

The thing I find though is that no matter how careful I am getting one free, as I move on to the others I always end up snagging at least one at the other end. It's hard to do it gradually too, because each rung of the step can catch! I was thinking about experimenting with filing those tabs right off, and see if there's another way to hold the shell on. I'd love to see Athearn do a frame re-design where you'd have screws going through the frame into shelves on the inside of the shell, or something like that. Things to ponder....

This could be an odd detail to add,When 1 of the "shocks"/Snubbers go bad on a P40/42 truck, the replacement part is supplied by Koni,a supplier of shocks/struts for automotive use. Amtrak will swap that part at a terminal, but not paint it,the yellow Koni part is noticable untill covered in road grime. Not sure if VIA does that as well.
