Can you post a pic of the Kato end on the board? You don't need to host it on a 3rd party site.

Athearn has clarified on their Facebook page that the bolted on nose is not new tooling, but instead pad printed, if that matters to anyone.

Thanks much. Are the couplers Kato or KD-5's with the pin removed? What's the curve radius you deal with? The sharpest radius I have I have run across is the 25 inch in the Club Yard Wye and at the Fair Grounds layout's 22 inch Reverse loop to the staging yard(normally do a reverse move into that yard! : . The Main line radius; 36 inch (main 1)/33 inch(main 2)seems to be the best for passenger cars,25 inch is about the tightest radius for most full size cars. Other then swapping out the factory "McHenry's" plastic for KD-5's,the Walters cars are stock.

I used the Kato couplers. They have the regular plastic kadee clones and the Passenger type couplers for close coupling as you can see in the above pics. The top two pics show the kadee compatible couplers in their boxes and second from bottom shows the close coupling coupler which gives a closer coupling. I will stay with the kato couplers as I like the closer spacing but do want to fix the ends on them eventually as moct clubs haf 36" or highr radius and my futer layout will have 36" and higher too so not to worried about tight curves. This will be my only superliner train too so I wont be mixing it with anything else hence the Kato couplers. The rest of my stuff will be North East single level stock with Kadees.

I gather that the Kato ends are a bit lacking of details the Walters ends have, but the flexable diaphragms on the Walters cars will "hook" when run on sharp curves,(under 25 inch radius,or #4 switches!),the "plastic McHenrys" from the orignal run of the Walters Superliners were a bit short shanked but were failure prone under load(plastic spring failed) Do you plan to run any of the Walters "El Cap" cars with your Superliners?(Coach,Trans-Dorm,or Lounge)

Hopefully, the wheelsets will not be "shiney" chrome as was the 1st run was The "cure" is to paint the wheel centers rail brown or rust color.

Oh boy am I in trouble with the Phase 3 scheme LOL Haha, that is the one thing about these cars-they look really great but they will empty your wallet in a hurry. And it's not like you can have a train of one car.

I'm still disappointed that Walthers had chosen not to offer these units in the Penn Central scheme which, ironically, is the railroad that started them in revenue service until Amtrak eventually took over them. Add to that, a number of Metros soldiered on under the Amtrak flag, still wearing Penn Central worms as late as 1983 ( I have the photos that prove it). But of course, Walthers reps are likely hanging on to the cliche' that "Penn Central doesn't sell".... Just don't tell that to Penn Central or 1970s-era northeastern modelers. It's too bad these won't be available "Undecorated" as they would be a very fun Alclad project.
