Hey everyone, I am currently working on a NJ Transit P40 repaint project. I have always loved the NJT scheme on these locos, and think they look really cool; especially on the NEC. They were also used on one of the, IMHO, neatest NEC trains in recent years, the ACES train. I am painting this engine to go along with the ACES train that I will be building. I am doing this loco before I build my IMW Bombardier Multilevels. This engine is also used on other NJT trains, especially since the ACES service has ended. For me, I could also use it as power for a ACL deadhead train on the NEC if I ever decide to invest in some Comets. I hope you can't tell, but this is actually my first ever complete paint job. I was going to wait until I was completely done to post on the build, but I think it's going well enough (and I can't really hold in my excitement any longer ), so I'll give you guys a SNEAK PREVIEW. I am pretty happy with how it is going so far. I have definitely learned a lot along the way. As you can see, I still have to do some touch up and add the decals. But, it's almost done besides that. I'm thinking I will number it #4803. I've been taking pictures every step of the way, so when I'm finished I'll be able to give a full report of everything that I did. I hope you enjoy the picture, and please let me know what you think!

Nice job acelephillies! Can't wait to see the complete build. Paul Z. Thanks Pual! I have been real busy lately so right now it doesn't look much different than it does in this picture here. I'm looking forward to finishing it though, and hope to get it all done within the next month. I'll post more pictures when I'm done.

Thanks! I use Tamiya tape and would highly recommend it.
I think I saw a few custom NJT P40's that you have done in the past. Care to share any pictures?
As for mine, I have not had the time to do anything else on it. However, I was hoping to do some work today and should be able to bang out a lot this whole week.

Thats looks very nice I wish Athearn would make one. I am assuming these are the Amtrak rebuilt 800 series P40's?

Unfortunately though, I think it is too much of a niche model to be mass produced by a major manufacturer. NJ Transit only owns four themselves. Maybe we can hope for the AMTK 42 though. Yes, you are correct about lineage of these P40's. They were purchased by NJT in 2007 and completely rebuilt by Beech Grove for use in the ACES service. Now that the ACES service has been terminated they are used in normal commuter service, usually on the Raritan Valley or Atlantic City lines. Here is a prototype photo:

First off, I want to apologize for such the looong delay from the last update. 6 months. I especially want to apologize to Paul, because he has shown specific interest and has been encouraging along the way. But don't worry, this project is not a write off! There have been numerous reasons for delays- complications with the paint job, an overall busy schedule, and nice weather. However, with all of those out of the way for now, I have once again been working on this model, as well as the multilevels! Last night I put on the gloss coat for decals to go on these evening. So without any further delay, let's get to the pictures! I have still not decided whether to number it 4803 or 4800. In the summer of 2011 (the era I want to concentrate on), I have found pictures of 4803 running with 4405. 4405 is the only ACES service AEM-7 that Atlas produced so I figured I would go with 4803. However, now that Atlas just announced the new run of ALP-44's, they are going to produce 4409. I am hoping to purchase the 4409, maybe with sound. I have found photos of 4409 and 4800 running together, so I am now leaning towards numbering my P40 4800. Stay tuned for more updates soon! After the decals go on I will brush paint the stainless grills on the top side and then seal it up. Then I will assemble it and it should be done. Thanks for looking!

Aces acelaphillies! Those are some sharp and clean lines. What masking tape did you use? I've been liking green frog tape.

It is made for models, so you can get it in very mall widths. I have never had problems with bleeding. I know that with some tapes you have to cut the edge with an X-ACTO to make sure it is sharp and straight, but honestly I just use the factory edge on the Tamiya Tape and I think it looks good. Here is a picture with a few decals. I will get more on this weekend.

I started adding the NJT Stripe on the side of the P40 today. I almost ran into a disaster when I realized after putting them in the water that the decals were not all connected as one stripe, but instead four different stripes. However, this gave me the chance to decrease the spacing between each stripe. Here is how it looks: Why am I cutting up the decal? Well, the set is actually made for the PL42AC, so the stripes are a little too long for the P40. Even though I cut up each section, I now think that the blue is a little larger than the other colors so that is the only one that you need to cut and overlap. From now on I will be going line by line working across. I have begun on the bottom stripe.
