Anyone know a way of obtaining this detail part? It's the strobe light found upon NJT commuter locos and was on Amtrak equipment.
Kato makes it as an extra for their f40ph but 7.00 shipping for just a pair (1.50-3) I don't think seems worth it

If you have a copy of the'14 Walters catalog, look at pg 930 for bases(Details West) and pages 795-797 for a possible bulb/LED (Minitronics or Ngineering). Fuctions on the decoder can mimic a strobe flash,READ and understand the decoder's programming manual on lighting special effects before programming the effect needed.

No matter where you order from you will most likely have to pay high shipping. If you plan to make a bunch of locos for Amtrak or commuter roads then order several packs of strobes as once Kato sells out of them they will be close to impossible to get. You only get one pair per pack too. DW and DA make various bases but no white strobe beacons just Amber. I prefer the Kato ones over just clear rod as I light them up and the white ones are great for that. www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnuwXS3e-rA&list=UUOZm1kbljTJ1mj2D3giYeZg Also depending which NJT loco you want to model you might need 2 sets as some locos have them on the front and rear.

Plan is to install them on a F40PH-2CAT That's cool. What size/brand LEDs did you use for that install?

I used these white LEDs made by Osram. In the Kato unit pictured I drilled a hole a tad smaller then the strobe casting pin all the way through the roof, I then drilled a hole the size of the led inside the shell enough for it to fit in, then I wired the LEDs up, placed them inside the shell in the holes, covered them up with electrical tape so they didnt light up the cab interior, and was done. The small strobe mounting pin does a nice job transmitting the light as you can see.

MGWSY is right. In fact, Kato once already did sell out of those strobes, and when they did, I had to be very conservative with my stash! They really will become impossible to get.
In fact, I just ordered a bunch more (among some other parts, split the shipping amongst people). Those strobes had to have been out of stock for several years now.
