That's the Antenna array is for the onboard Wi-fi,the onboard wireless server is installed in the car, The Hatch in the car roof is most likely the exhaust vent for the convection oven and the microwave in the kitchen area.

Perfect Acela, thank you!
Just ordered two IVb Food Service cars and it was driving me crazy what the hell that was, I didn't even think WiFi.
The Amfleet project btw is back on now that my work duties have calmed somewhat. Posting a pic under my orig. thread shortly.

Not sure if any of Amfleet II food service cars have the Wi-fi server on board, The Taglos, and the Ca Surfliner fleet are the only other cars rigged for Wi-fi. Some of the commuter services have been rigged for Wi-fi,NMRX is 1 of the services.

...and the Acela, but I'm not sure where the antenas are on those cars.

This is a detail I may have to think about adding to my Cafe car as well. The antenna array looks very similar to the modern setup that VIA uses. All trains in the Quebec-City Windsor Corridor are WiFi equipped. The antennas are mounted on the LRC or HEP2 Club (Business Class) cars, and on Renaissance trains they're mounted on the service cars. There are then smaller antennas on each car that receive that signal and re-broadcast it in each car. We've actually had WiFi on the Montreal-Halifax Ocean since last year, but the current setup only has the WiFi in the service cars. You can get a decent signal in the diner (which is sandwiched between the two service cars) and a little bit in the rear of the last coach (forward) or the front of the first sleeper (behind the second service car), but not anywhere else on the train. I'm hoping they'll improve that in the future. Here's what the current VIA setup looks like on an LRC Club. The original version had a large white dome, but was replaced with this setup a few years ago. I can say from using both that this system seems to work much better! Here's a photo showing the old-style antenna (at the rear of the car), with the large white dome.

All you need to model the detail could be made out of plastruct square stock for the framework, blobs of solder could be used to shape the antennas for the array.(painted flat black)

Ah always loved those VIA cars!
Yes I was thinking blobs of solder too! I shall see when the food service cars come.
Amfleet project is back in full swing. Honestly the most time consuming part so far is applying the LITTLE ITTY BITTY warning decals to the Amfleet underbody equipment. Not only getting them straight, but KEEPING THEM ON until you seal them.
Putting the hand bars (grab irons) inside the diaphragm alongside the vestibule door is no picnic either. In my other post I mounted one lower than the other and it always bothered me. So attempt #2 is drying now. Thankfully the diaphragms and the while end assembly is removable, or it would have been impossible.
Custom decals will be made soon to do the emergency exit and door placards on the car ends under the diaphragm now that I got decal paper with WHITE backing and not clear!
Okay I've hijacked my own thread, back to the fun

Does anybody have protitype photos of the WI-FI arrays on the Taglo equipment,ACELA or any of the Surfliner cars in Ca,suspect the array used on AF I's is installed on the 2 Horizen food service cars assigned wth the "comarrows" in San Joaquin service. If memory serves, thre're 2 Superliner lounges still floating in the Amtrak-CA services as well, not sure if there're Wi-FI arrays on them as well.
