Hello,
I was thinking about modeling a LIRR F7 locomotive. However there is no model that resembles the units they had. I guess that means a lot of kitbashing or does anyone have any other suggestions?

LIRR had 2 power packs that were in F-unit style Carbodies, all the others were in Alco FA Carbodies. All the power packs supplied 600 volt DC HEP to the former MU cars converted to coaches and parlor cats As a reference, check the book "Diesels of the Sunrise Trail"

Thanks. I have the book "Diesels to the Sunrise Trail" and looking at the pictures I thought they were EMD units. In fact on page 73 it states the EMD power cabs are numbered 619, 620, 621, 622, & 623. Additionally 621 is an ex-B&O F-7 unit and 619 is an ex-Milwaukee F-9 as seen on page 63.

This is a model you can use a Dummy unit for,or from a damaged model by removing the gearing and drive shafts, leaving the motor remains as weight. The orignal FA's retained their Prime mover and Generator when converted by GE, the F's were ballasted with concrete then a Cummins power Generator was installed. The same was done to some of the FA's when the Alco Prime Mover failed. This is the perfect model for Soundtraxx's "Sound car" Decoder for the lights markers and generator sound.

Thanks for the info. But the one sticking pointor concern is removing the grills along the top of the unit and installing the proper grills towards the rear. The port holes will have to be removed or filled in. No model I have seen looks anything like what the LIRR had.

You could use body filler to smooth over most of the Farr grill, then use a cannon & co detail part where the intake grill is mounted and install a fan on the steam generator roof hatch. On the FA power cars the rad fan and rads were retained when GE did the conversion.

All of the "Power Packs" provided 600 volt DC power HEP,believe none were setup with nose power "plugs" for the 600 volt DC HEP,only the 27 point MU plug was installed on the nose. (allowed Ground fault and engine shut down alarms to be sent to the lead engine if the power was wyed at Montauk. )
