NJDOT didn't really take the time to match the paint, there was such a push to retire the old CNJ passenger cars on the NY&LB trains,it was cover up and GO back then. At least the E-port Shop did a decent job of patching the cars. Not sure if all the Homemade "Push-Pull" cars CNJ built stayed on the Raritan line trains

Broken arrow patching has been applied to both cascade green cars. It really was as simple as hitting it with unglossed Floquil BN green...meaning if I'd caught it in the beginning, it would have taken under 5 minutes to mask the patches instead of 2 hours repainting and replacing the decals that I accidentally lifted off. Photos coming later this week.

As promised: Unlike a normal masking job, I didn't strike a new edge on the masking tape, since I don't get the impression that the State was very careful on the prototype. It made the edge just a little less sharp.

Would not surprise me if the CNJ shop crew "Freehanded" the patch paint job, just masking off the windows and ends of the "patch" .

My Jersey Builder will finally have power! I scored an SP GP40P-2 at a price I could stomach. Instead of fighting with an old brass Overland, I think it will be easier to wipe and rebuild an Athearn Genesis as discussed earlier in the thread. New cab, subbase, and nose. The red marker lights front and back will be the biggest challenge. Maybe I need to get back on Shapeways and try again...

Will the Overland model become a shop queen, always lurking in the engine house?

Will the Overland model become a shop queen, always lurking in the engine house? Ha! As good as plastic is, I sure feel like brass would be that way. Fortunately, I never bought much.

You could yank out the drive and run it as a dummy unit!

So my GP40P-2 arrived today. At first glance, de-SPification will also require backdating truck sideframes, removing extended-range dynamic brakes, and getting rid of the antenna plate. While the guts of the model are correct, it's not extraordinarily close in details.

Aaand I ordered a pair of kits from Union Station Products today to build the P-S 48-seat coaches. This will be an interesting adventure. When the parts get here, I'll start evaluating how much of the undersides I want to change on the cars--probably will try to get all the most visible details. These will be Empire Builder Orange/Green, and he is modifying them for the full-height conductor's window and side skirts removed. In other words, this won't be a warmed-over GN kit, but tailored to the NJDoT era. The core will be a Walthers GN 60-seat car, which gives a pretty close roof.
I'll post pics when I have the parts, and TSP is also willing to do these with the half-height conductor's window if you wanted to model one of those.

I proofed the drawings today for the USP car sides. He should be cutting the plastic soon.

For those who have considered pulling NJDoT equipment with a patched SOU E8, Walthers is now releasing one. And for the amount of weathering we need, it really doesn't matter if the paint colors are off!

Considering the harsh chemicals used at the wash rack back in the'70's,the colors would fade or change anyway.
