IHP officially announced our next HO project! Hyundai-Rotem Silverliner V MU cars! These models will be injection-moulded plastic and produced for us by our manufacturer in China. We hope to make them available as powered RTR models, display models and kits. These are the first injected-plastic HO scale US-prototype MU commuter cars ever, a first for the industry. Tooling has begun and we will show some sample photos of the test shots shortly. Thanks! Mike Bartel

Mike, the test shot of the body shell looks good. Being a weekend traveler on the R2 & R7 line, these are some nice riding cars and I plan on budgeting for a set for my layout.
Have you decided on a drive system? Will the cars have any lighting features?

A few things are still being worked out for a drive system, but provision for lighting has been worked into the design of the parts. They will have some things that we didn't do with the Kawasaki cars. Mike Bartel

Mike, congratulations!! I can tell how excited you are about this, and rightfully so! This is a huge step for IHP! The samples look awesome! It's pretty amazing how far commuter modeling and your company have come. Once again, congratulations. I know you said in the past that you appreciate input, so I will give a little. I won't be offended if you don't do anything with it. I think modelers like to see lighting effects. Headlights, marker lights, and ditch lights would be cool. DCC options would also be cool. Sound would be cool. For a RTR model, I don't want to have to worry about drives. Something that runs reliably and fast like the prototype would be great. I wonder if Rapido or Walthers would be open to selling their RDC or Metroliner drives? I like decals . The more graphics the better, even if some of the smaller warning placards or numberboard decals are given on a separate sheet. Please don't take these comments too heavily. This is your project and you make the decisions! I am just airing out some things that come to mind... I also have some questions: Are you planning on doing married pairs or just singles? Detailed or non-detailed interior? Are you planning on selling it through some of the larger vendors, or exclusively through IHP? When do you expect the preorder period to be, and do you have any sort of target price range? Also, is that photograph metal? Don't feel pressured to answer any/all of these if you would rather not. Also, I am thinking about making a promo video for some of these commuter models to put on my YouTube channel. That way I could try to get the word out. Would those pics on your Facebook page be ok for me to use?

Thanks, acelaphillies! Not a problem, and I can tell you that I've thought of all of this, even though some decisions have yet to be finalized. But, here are some answers I can give you as of this moment:
The models will have clear window and headlight/auxiliary light/class light inserts and these have provision for lighting with bulbs or LEDs. And they will have some kind of interior, as we expect to use an underfloor drive.
The models will be fully painted, and we want to have all markings and placards printed in place. No decals.
We'll be selling the models direct from IHP, and through the SEPTA Transit Gift Shop. We're looking at mid-late 2017 for the first models. (I want to take my time on this one and really get it right!)
The sample shell is styrene plastic, from the production tool, and is painted with Tamiya Gloss Aluminum. The pantograph sample is 3-D printed in red material, and is the correct pan for the Silverliner V.
The SEPTA version will be available in single-unit and married pair configurations. The sample is a single-unit.
Absolutely, please use the photos in any kind of video you wish! We'll be posting more photos of the shell on the IHP page that you can use. Be sure to link it to our FB page!
Thanks!
Mike Bartel

Mike, very cool! I am sure that you will do a great job with it as you seem to take pride in your work. The mid-late 2017 release will be perfect timing, especially on the wallet now that Atlas released its commuter models as well . I am looking forward to keeping my eye on this project and eventually being able to get some Silverliner V's on my layout. Hopefully I can spread the word around a little with my Youtube page.
