Hi Slowfreight  , Just checking in. Have you had a chance to proceed with the repair? If so, did you like the results? ------------------------------ AntonioFP45, The white wouldn't be for blending the surface. It would just be a base behind the decal stripes, if they prove to be translucent. The way I will repaint the stainless finish, the striping (and the end of the car) gives a hard break between original and repaired stainless. backshophoss, Nope, don't have the paint conversion chart. Best source I've found for Alclad (and paint and glue in general) is ebay. I will be ordering up a bottle of 105 this week. If I had a good LHS, I would frequent it more, but the closest LHS is 85% tinplate...AND at great prices...which is starting to create another monster in the household. I keep reminding the boss that it's still cheaper than if I had a muscle car as a hobby. |

I have a palette of 4 grey colors and 2 Alclads to create test swatches. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get a dedicated afternoon to experiment.

So my color swatch experiments would be considered a failure if it hadn't helped me learn how to spray Alclad. I'm still not sure how forgiving the whole coating system may be, so I've tried to follow antonioFP45's instructions very tightly. On the messed up side, I masked above the window line and used a combination of NYC grey and Alclad 105, followed up with the Alclad acrylic gloss. It is noticeably a different shade, but I think once assembled the car will look passable enough to sell.  Here it is next to the unretouched roof:  So feeling a little more confident, I sanded off the lettering from the opposite side and masked/repainted just the letterboards (Santa Fe and Pullman lettering).  Results are encouraging, but in this up-close picture you can see that the NYC grey/Alclad 105 combination has a bit of a brown tinge that could probably be eliminated if I used a different shade of grey undercoat. I did not clear-coat this touch-up paint job...if the Alclad finish is durable enough, then it should be fine as-is.  Remember, in the last pic the only thing that's been repainted is the old Santa Fe letterboard. Due to the multi-layer coating system that Walthers used, I think the only practical way to remove the lettering is to sand it off with 1000-grit and repaint with Alclad. If I started with the right shade of undercoat, I think the 105 can make an invisible repair, but this looks like it might be close enough. I'm struggling to really see the results because silver is really a non-color and the eye doesn't process it well. I learned first-hand how too much Alclad just looks like silver paint, even though the first coat or two don't possibly look like they're going to work. All in all, it was expensive to have to buy another deluxe Proto car, but this was a learning experience. I don't plan to shell out another $30 to get the parts to fully upgrade this as a HEP-rebuilt Amtrak car, but am considering putting it in Phase III stripes to sell it...that is, unless anyone here wants to finish out the project themselves. The Pine series sleepers were among the first rebuilt with HEP to run with the new Amfleet back in the late 70's, which is what I plan to do with mine:  Amtrak 2983 Pine Arroyo 5-1979 mb by mbernero, on Flickr |

From the pics in your post,the patch looks seamless,but this is with the screen in "night mode"(win 10),will look again
tomorrow.
From watching a show on one of the Discovery Networks,believe Walters Chinese manufacturer uses a process that creates
a "plated" finish by a certain mix of chemicals,along the lines of what was shown on an episode of "West Coast Customs" in their
paint booth on all kinds of auto body parts,both plastic and sheet metal.
Looked again today,again the patches look seamless,don't see any brown "tinting",do you still plan
to paint the window band white before the decals go on?
