Many of you may know of the outstanding model railroader Lance Mindheim. His layout of modern Miami, FL is pretty well-known as it has been featured in many publications. Anyway, Lance runs a layout building company (http://www.shelflayouts.com/) and apparently his current project is building a 1990's era NEC for a customer. Check out these inspiring photos! There are more pictures at this link www.shelflayouts.com/PhotoGallery.htm. I think that one of the things that he has captured well is weathering. I think that a lot of us are almost afraid to weather our nice sleek passenger equipment. But the way that the AEM-7 in these pictures is weathered really captures the in-service look. I look forward to seeing new pictures and learning more as the webpage is updated. The last picture of the river portals was just recently added a few days ago. If anyone learns more about this project please share. I hope that the layout will receive catenary at the end.

Amazing. I'm one of those newbies that's yet to tackle weathering. I follow Lance's work but I've yet to see this. Thanks for sharing.

I'm one of those newbies that's yet to tackle weathering. I'm in the same boat as you. I found a picture of the real bridge over the Passaic River. www.flickr.com/photos/jag9889/1242094037/lightbox/I would love to know who this layout is going to, I wonder if they are online on any of the forums. I would also love to see an article on the building of this layout.

This is just a personal opinion,Stainless steel thats washed on a regular schedule looks clean, the paint will lighten(fade) over time and weather exposure, during the winter months, it turns dull due to a lack of washing. Go easy on the weathering, just a light dusting.

Wow that is one superb layout. Would love to see some video of trains running on it once complete.

I have to be honest though, I am less than excited about this layout. People had been hyping it up to me for months, but then when I finally saw these pictures, it was a little disappointing. While the modeling technique is good, and I'll probably use its advice, the layout fails to capture the real appearance of these locations. First of all, I do recognize that it would be impractical to do everything super prototypical. I too plan to skip a lot of locations and use view blocks between distant locations as a way of disguising just how close they are. That said, there are some disappointing things. Chief amongst the is the use of the "Trenton Makes The World Takes" Bridge, which is a small road bridge. The NEC crosses the Delaware on a much more impressive Stone arch bridge. Why he chose that trestle and not the real bridge is beyond me. That trestle is a major Trenton landmark, so even lay people will probably notice the inconsistency. The gallery of photos also makes me question some of the choices being made. North of Metropark, there isn't really a whole lot of wooded areas that would make sense as a view block. In fact, the Dock lift bridges are in the urban heart of Newark, and I'd be curious to see if more urban structures are included. I'd also like to see if Newark Penn Station is being modeled. The schematic makes it sound like its going to skip right to "meadows/marshland" right after Dock. This layout looks far from finished, so we'll see how it turns out. Hopefully, Metropark and New Brunswick will look vaguely more like the real locations (I have a soft spot for Metropark, its where I first started getting into trains as a young kid). I hope I eat my words! I look forward to seeing new pictures and learning more as the webpage is updated. The last picture of the river portals was just recently added a few days ago. If anyone learns more about this project please share. I hope that the layout will receive catenary at the end. I'm told it will not feature catenary, just the poles. I've also been told by multiple people that the layout is based somewhere near Princeton, New Jersey, and that the owner is fairly private. I have no way of truly confirming this, but my guess is lance's pictures will be the only ones we get.

I have seen the real thing many times and picked up on it right away. It would have been really cool to put that bridge behind the RR bridge like in real life. I hope I eat my words! I agree that the layout may not capture some of the areas faithfully. But the modeling skills are superb. It would look 100x better with wire strung up there.
