As anybody on the board ever ran the Train Station Products/ Intermountain "El Cap" cars? While the kits/models look good, they tend to be poor runners on the rails. Part of the problem has been the trucks, prone to fail or lose wheelsets and the truck mounted couplers don't help Any other pitfalls? Trying to help a couple of freinds to get their cars to run in mixed consists with the Walters cars. Any ideas???

You're welcome, I'm glad the info was helpful. I have a set of four 1970s Eastern Car Works Pullman Standard streamlined cars that I'm going to assemble and refinish into the New Haven's McGinnis scheme. One of the 1st warnings I received from modelers was to toss the trucks due to the poor quality. Rapido offers a truck that comes close to the type used on the New Haven 8600 series cars, so I'll purchase them once I've made some good progress on those cars.

I'm about to help a friend get his small fleet of El-Cap cars to a runable condition, the cars are Train Station Products "factory built" kits for Intermountain Railways, with truck mounted couplers, using the built up kit's trucks,he did install KD-5's and all the cars have metal wheelsets. Some pics will follow in a day or 2.

Started on the 1st set of trucks, 1 fell apart after it was pulled off the car! Keep a modeler's Square handy to check tram as the repair progresses. On this truck, the glue joint failed, and a tiny crack appeared

When that repaired truck's ACC sets overnight, will set up for mounting the coupler pockets to the car, will also weigh the car to check if additional weight is needed, then a test run

The Train Station Products Diner has 6 wheel trucks that have some "added on" springs, that can fall off. Also you need to remove the center axle to reach the mounting screw. Train Station Products did not run the Lounge car,the Walters Lounge should fit in after a little "toning down" the car sides with a matte finish overspray.

It helps to use the wonderful tool from Micro-Mark to clean up the wheelbearing needle point so the truck rolls well on the track. Now how to place the coupler box on the car;thankfully there's a U shaped molding mark on the underframe, where the coupler box should go,using the top plate of the box,set the lip next to the vestabule plate. using a point of an Xacto knife to mark where to drill, twist the point a few times (creates a "center punch" type mark),do both ends at the same time. Now put in pin vise, the clearance drill for a 2-56 screw, drill both ends, then swap the drill for the 2-56 tap, then tap both ends. NOTE:If you run under 30" Radius curves, use longer shank couplers,KD 146 or 156(whisker type),26 or 36 (standard type) using KD 5's is the close coupled setup, all are center shank couplers Attachments:

Ready for install,KD-5 with box,2-56 screw and a couple of washers, while you can use an "overset" version of the #5,you still wind up shimming the coupler when using 36" wheelsets. Attachments:

Also the above trucks are also avaible in silver, both same msrp 920-2101,GSC 41-NDO(CIB)outside swing hanger 4 wheel, and 920-2117 GSC 6 wheel truck for the Diner and Lounge.
Santa Fe had the habit of steam cleaning and repainting the trucks silver after each run, till the point of having to sand blast off all the layers of paint. Also when ever truck repairs/wheelset swapouts were done.
