I think this was rumoured for a while now, but Walthers has just announced that they will be upgrading their Superliners to the Proto line. This will include some added details (such as the awesome window gasket detail like on the Amfleets), and they'll also be available lighted. Have a look here: WalthersProto SuperlinersBoth Superliner I and II, available in Phases III, IV and IVb plus Amtrak California and Surfliner. ETA August to October (depending on the car). They're also re-releasing MHCs in the Proto line (Phase III, Phase III with US mail, and Ph IV).

Seems like Walters is listening to their customer base,1st Amfleet,2nd Superliner(3rd run)with the MHC's is good news, now an upgraded run of the Horizen/Comet cars along with the Viewliner I +II's is needed to complete the cycle. A run of Pacific Parlour Cars(ex-El Cap lounges)could become the "icing" on the cake!

The first of the Viewliner II's was cut loose from the factory last month,it was a baggage version there're a couple pics in Viewliner II thread on RR.net,and on Amtrak's site as well, will cycle from the factory to the Albany shop for some tests, then sent south to Florida for full acceptance testing. Seems that CSX doesn't want to touch them period.

No problem. I just wanted to clarify something. While it was assumed on the Model Railroader, Railroad.net and I think ModelRailroadForum, that I was a Walthers employee by quite a few forum members, this is NOT the case. The assumption came from anything I posted from Walthers coming out with new products (PRR Broadway Limited, 20th Century, more Athearn/Walthers P42 Ph V releases, 1st revised Superliners, Amfleets, 2nd time revised Superliners...they have all come true, usually within weeks or months of my posts. One or two are lucky, I just managed to nail them all so far (be nice if I could get these odds at the blackjack table!) So hence a lot of modelers began thinking I was a secret Walthers employee giving the hints out before official releases were put on the website. To reiterate... I am not, nor ever been a Walthers employee, and while I "may" have some inside into about upcoming products, NOTHING is ever guaranteed, as what has been decided as a future model, can get shelved VERY quickly or even worse, cancelled. Since my postings, I was getting bombarded by modelers with private messages and e-mails regarding future Walthers products and what people wanted, each response was "I am not a Walthers employee yada yada yada." Acelaphillies, I hope you don't mind me throwing this out there. I know you have seen some of my "Walthers-Nostradamus" predictions come true, ha ha. THAT all being said, if, and "IF" I have some inside information, I will gladly post it. Just please keep in mind that nothing is EVER 100% committed until research, CAD drawings, mockups, test samples are sent for the production runs. Once again things can change at any time. I will say that the Amfleet project for Walthers was a huge undertaking, and while not 100% perfect, they sure blew anything out of the water previously. They took a big gamble with that project. For those of you (including myself) who wanted retooled Amtrak Horizon cars in Phase III, IV, IVb, this may be a good year for you PS... if you want to see a model done, your best avenue is to e-mail Walthers or do the survey online at their website (E-mail is better than the survey mind you), and let them KNOW what you want. Happy modeling all!!! Tom

Is Walters planning to do some of the "oddballs" in the Superliner fleet, the modified Diner/Lounge used on Auto Train and the "Cross Country Cafe" used on the Texas Eagle??

I don't know much about those specific cars, but if it requires more tooling I would seriously doubt it. Especially because there are no HO Autotrain carriers available.

Walters, featured the Auto Train with the 1st run of their Superliners,a few of the SL-1 Diners were converted to Lounges, no changes were done on the carbody on the outside, just on the inside. Believe the Cross Country Cafe was just an interior mod.

I wish Walthers would redo the Commuter cars as the old ones are going for around $60 - $80 each on ebay lately and I would love to see a new version with correct 33" wheels and full underbody detail. I plane to detail the ones I have but at around 20 or so cars its a major undertaking to carefully take out the windows without breaking any, strip, add the underbody details, fix the trucks, and paint and properly decal the cars. I could use some in MBTA, MNCR, CDOT, and NJT!

You might try ACC Debonder to get the window strips loose (Carefully!!) As far as paint, you might find a close match in the Model Master Military Paint lines. If Walters reruns the Comet/Horizen Fleet cars, figure on the current version truck used on the Amfleet cars(3rd gen)with the inside bronze bushing

During the first run of the metal plated Superliners, Walthers WAS supposed to come out with the 37000-series Diner-Lounge (Cross Country Cafe) cars and they were to follow the S-II Transition Sleeper and the S-I Coach Baggage cars.
Evidently this didn't happen.
I am not sure as to why, even Walthers said (back then) that it would just be a simple interior change, and a few other minor exterior changes as the 37000's used the S-I Diner carbody. For whatever reason, it never came into fruition.
With this run, from what I hear, it doesn't seem like it will be planned either. I unfortunately would not count on the specialized Auto Train Lounge and Deluxe Sleepers either. Who knows, maybe they will suddenly announce them after a while, stranger things have happened!
My suggestion: If you want them, e-mail Walthers.

The Walthers MHC's in Phase III bother me because the "Amtrak" logo is grossly inaccurate compared to the prototype. I was hoping they would fix it. I was wrong. Oh well, we do have the Amfleets!! Tom
