Hey there
My name is Mark C and I'm from Montréal. I'm a huge VIA Rail fan (Via phile in other circles) both in the HO format and the real deal. I have always had a soft spot for Amtrak however I bleed Yellow and Blue (or is it Ren green and grey?!). I have a freelance that I model and a prototype. My prototype is VIA Rail of course from 1978-2001. I would love to say I model VIA Rail in all of it's eras however, I have no cars in the Flag scheme. I dislike it, found it hideous on the prototype and found it to be a cheap knock off of UP's scheme. The only cars I find the wordmark and wavy flag look good on are the Renaissance cars and I have none of those.
My freelance is called Pan Can (Pan Canadian). It is set from 1965-1975 and is an amalgamation of CN and CP, CN going private then merging with CP to form Pan Can. Basically a canadian Pen Central with better equipment, no crooked big wigs and a limitless desire to operate passenger trains. I'm a passenger guy if you can't tell and I have and intend to have only basic freight to show that my trains actually run on mainlines. Also, I love the big MLWs so I have to have them pull something other then stalled passenger trains......although there's something sweet about seeing a mighty M630 haul a 10-12 car transcontinental with disabled locos.
I love the building aspect and detailing of passenger cars. I have a rather sizeable fleet for both railroads( VIA + Pan Can) and Rapido is mainly the company from whom I buy because I need Canadian prototypes. I do not have a layout however I do manage to play with my trains. I have a 37 foot hailway at home and use the good ol' DC power pack wired to rail joiners and just add in a station and enough track to almost get down that hall....the only way to enjoy Rapido's VIA Canadian (or any VIA transcon) when one doesn't have a layout with which to put it on.
I happen to love other things that aren't VIA as well as North American. I have a humongeous soft spot for the Orient Express and have imported a 12 car train from various makers. I don't know European models like I know North American passenger stuff so I may have ended up buying a sizeable amount of foobies. I've built for a friend of a friend a South African combine and am set to build a few other car types as well.
Glad to be here and I hope to share the knowledge I have acquired over the years and to acquire additionnal knowledge
