Over the years,RR will create or ordered business cars and in some cases,an entire train, Conrail created a track Geometry train with some Heavyweight cars that were stashed somewhere. Amtrak and NS built their own track geometry cars Some RR's in their own shops created the Theater car is show off the RR to their customers. Amtrak is reported to build a 2ND gen track Geo car using 1 of the Viewliner prototype body shells. Amtrak used a wrecked Amfleet shell to create a business car for PR moves or 1st runs of service on a route. The possibility's are endless. Currently working on 2 business cars for the club I'm with, 1 is a OBS/lounge car,the other is a Theater /Dome car will post photos when I figure out how it's done.

We were lucky enough to get the 40th Anniversary Train for National Train day this year Today (04/30/13) it's tied on to #3 and passing thru to a Display date in Fullerton Ca. Trains have been used to promote stuff in the past, the Circus, rock bands, country singers, movies(Disney's Christmas Carol was the last 1 I know of),and election campaign's. There was also ABC's "Good Morning America" train a few years back with a heavy moded "cabbage" use for the Sat Uplink equipment.

A forgotten car type is a Dynometer car and research car, used when testing new or rebuilt locos,or new model locos. Over the last weekend,BNSF was using the Raton Sub as a test site with a bunch of power. BNSF 81 "Canyon Diablo" along with BNSF 82 "Koonenai River" along with 3 SD 70 ACE and 1 AC-44,and 2 EMD SD-70 ACE Demonstration units were running up/down the Co side of Raton. "Canyon Diablo" looks like it was a HW combine converted to the "Dyno" car,in the process had a spare set of LW trucks installed.
Pics to follow soon

Here's a better pic from a fellow member of ASHOME, Parker Sando, this was taken at Trinidad Co while in route to the Greeley Museum at Greeley Co. Note the roof drip rails where the former baggage door was, also the reuse of LW style trucks on the car. The carbody was reworked multiple times, patched all over. Attachments:

Here's a look of the "B" end of that car, believe the unviewable side is the same,BNSF put in windows on both sides of the door and in the door as well. Somewhere on that end is a hatch or plug in point for sensor cables. (pic credit,P Sando,ASHOME) Attachments:

OK,here's something that BNSF did to Kootenai River's A-end of the car, extended the vestibule about 3-4 feet. A bit strange looking. (pic credit,P Sando,ASHOME) Attachments:

The 1st car to be converted after Amtrak's creation was a Dome car(as far as I Know ) into a "Theater" car. Used to show off the ROW to customers, shareholders, and Public Relations(Operation Lifesaver) moves. After removing the end wall/end door and replacing that with a large sheet of glass, then installing seats, some on a raised tiered platform,to allow an unobstructed view. The space in the front of the car is turned lounge/bar area and then there's the dome seating(facing back). Some cars have Flood lights installed to allow viewing at night as well This is an early version I did years ago, starting with a Con-Cor full size dome car. The roof is off. Attachments:
