A Mechanical Tech at Amtrak said they're retiring them at a rate of one a week so they will probably all be gone by spring.

They still have not recorded the sound files yet from what a source told me today (not many left in service so hurry up). They can still record the MARC AEM7s as well as SEPTA if necessary. I'm glad to hear that the Atlas Rep initiated the discussion about an ACS-64. Atlas did such an excellent job with the AEM7, I can't imagine any manufacturer doing a better job (except maybe Rapido).

I saw another going into the portal heading to Penn with a Keystone train in tow when I was heading northbound on my 7 train leaving Hunter's Point. Brought back memories.

I saw photos of 953 being scrapped :-0! The body was already sliced up with the cab section on the ground, fully in tact. It was a disheartening thing to see.

Wow. What a run. 38 years of day-in and day-out service, eclipsed only by the GG1's 46 years. When you said they were being retired, I didn't imagine they were going straight to the scrap yard. One would hope that we'd see more than a single one go to a museum, but museums have become very finicky about preserving modern anything.

Amtrak's hand may have been forced to go the scrap route to get some $$$$ from salvaged electronics on board. Yard track space might be full of stored HHP-8's and unaccepted ACS-64's at Wilmington and Bear De shops.
There are various congressmen(aka "congress critters")that are keeping a close eye on what Amtrak does at times, refered to a "Micascope".

Shame....I wish there were more electrified rail lines in the US that these could have been saved from the scrapper.
Ironically, all the old AEM-7's might be off the NEC before the new Atlas AEM-7's finally hit the stores...
I wonder if the ACS-64 will get the new Phase IIIb paint? If so, it might spur more interest for someone (Atlas, Kato?) to manufacture one in HO since it will give modelers 2 different paint schemes to choose from (Phase IIIB & V). Maybe a fantasy PRR scheme could be added. PRR would have celebrated their 170th birthday this year (1846-2016).

I think one of the AEM7s was already sent to a museum for preservation. I can't recall which one (933 maybe?).
So I doubt all of them will be scrapped.

This is the first time Kato is offering Amfleet II's and Viewliner I sleeper Kato had only Amfleet I's,may have done Heritage Sleeper in N already. A side note:Kato announced a single level "Bookcase" model of the SouthWest LTD in N to be done in phase II paint
