Well this was a bit of a surprise! Thought it's been pretty solidly confirmed that Athearn will be announcing the SDP40F in HO some time in the near future, Kato has just made the announcement that they'll be doing it in N scale. Available in both Phase I and II paint. They're referring to it as "Type 1", which leaves one wondering if they have plans to do additional body styles later. My familiarity with the SDP40F is limited, so I don't know what those would be. www.katousa.com/N/SDP40F/index.htmlHere's the announcement flyer: They're advertising their 10-car El Capitan set to go along with it. As for the HO version, Athearn has said they're not announcing it this weekend, but in reply to a comment on their FB page they did write "Have to keep looking for that announcement later. " So it's coming, but looks the N scale folks will have theirs first.

The SDP40F was "convertable" to Freight service,as the E-60's were, during the first few years of Amtrak's life, not sure if "type II" is how ATSF rebuilt them as freight power after trading some CF-7's and SSB-1200's switchers to Amtrak

Anyone else a little unnerved when a company that makes our models publishes "innacurate" dates? GG1s lasted until 1981 on Amtrak. Even Conrail's fleet, the first to be replaced, was not retired until the very end of 1979.
The SDP40Fs were delievered in 1973/74, not 1977.
I guess I would hope that if people are researching these things to build models, that they at least know the basic facts!

I think it was the first 30 that had pointed noses with recessed doors. The later ones had flat noses without the points. The first 30 tended to stay on lines out of Los Angeles; the others were seen on things like Florida trains. When Santa Fe traded units for its SF40Cs (I think they called them), they modified the front steps and noses. This would be a pretty big change to tooling if Kato did them.

There's an Amtrak Historical group that Kato could have checked with, and there are some other books they could have looked at,but that might be much beyond what the manufactures want to do for research The recessed headlight/door in the low nose was most likely a change done at EMD for "cost savings" at La Grange to a flat nose for the door/headlight install.(phase II???) The "final" blow to the SDP40F's was the 3 axle trucks used were considered derailment prone, unsure if it was a design defect,or state of art track standards at that time,Host RR's placed speed restrictions on the SDP40F's across the system at curves in track. Many were "remanufactured" into F40PHR's,recycling prime movers, main altenators, and traction motors. Believe version I and version II means ph I and ph II,something might have been "translated" wrong from manufacturer.
