In the Feb'16 issue of MRN,starting on pg 14 is a review on Athearn's GP-9 and GP-9B now part of the Genesis line. Currently UP and ATSF(as GP-7 and GP-7B) have been announced. While built as freight power,by sticking a steam generator in the short hood,they became the loco of choise to use on secondary LD trains,branchline passenger services,commuter trains,and on mixed trains on the plains of the central US. On some commuter services,at the outer end of the line,no need for a wye or turntable,just do a run around move and couple to the cars to return to the city. Depending on the RR involved the Geeps could be setup as short hood foreward or long hood foreward. Some of the GP-7/9's found their way to be part of current Commuter operators rosters as switching/ work train power,MN and MBTA come to mind,CNJ just before the GP40P's arrived,and the creation of NJT.
Later models,the GP-18 (NYC) and GP-20 will be allowed in this thread.

Those CNJ GP7s were operating well into the early 80s alongside the GP40Ps. I think it was the F40PHs that bumped them from from passenger service. While certainly not a hard rule, it seemed that most of them were assigned to Raritan Valley Line trains. I'm working on two of them, although only one is approaching being ready for the paint shop NJ DOT 5681, ex CNJ 1523. The prototype still exists, down in Tuckahoe on the Cape May Seashore Lines. The base model is a Phase II passenger GP7 by P2K. It doesn't have the appropriate pilots, but I don't think I'll find a spare "Phase III" sill/walkway/pilot anytime soon. The Head End Lighting Cabinets are Custom Finishing, the marker lights are from Shortline Products. Plano makes the grills, and the spark arrestors are Details west. The horns are A200s by cal scale. I still need to add some louvers and panels, but I can do those with styrene and Archer louver decals. I really like these Plano See-through grills and shutters! Fudged the cab signal box a little, but its not noticeable unless you take a picture like this. Also, 1523/5681 had a "mystery box" behind the cab that does not appear to be on other units. I'm told it was an experiment of some kind but I don't remember what it was. Its welded on, so they just locked the box.

CNJ didn't need cab signals fleetwide untill the Aldene ramp was put in service,and started to run on the NEC to Newark Penn and laid up in Harrison yard. However CNJ power used on NY&LB needed Cab signal gear installed to reach Newark Penn,then Harrison yard from Bay Head.
