What is a "Mixed Train"? Basicly a passenger car(a Combine car normally)or Caboose/Drover Caboose used to provide a basic passenger service to a branchline freight local, and in some cases Express, and Mail service for that branch. The passenger car/Caboose would be spotted at the Depot, while the local switches,A/C was open windows, Heat was a coal/oil stove used to keep the coach area warm. These cars were HW equipment, downgraded to this service and sometimes were painted like Cabooses! The last remaining mixed train service was the Georgia RR Macon-Savannah Local till "A-Day"

Meanwhile, I believe Soo Line kept selling passenger tickets for riding in a caboose until 1984, but don't remember what route that it ran. In Canada, ONR kept running mixed trains even longer, and not sure but BC Rail might have too.

The Georgia RR was the only Mixed service I remember that was running at "A-Day" ATSF,UP,CB&Q, and other RR's ran Mixed Trains to the late '50's-early '60's,in some cases connecting with Main line passenger trains. Here's an example, you're ticketed to Pecos Tx from Chicago Il Round trip, via the ATSF instead of the MoPac, leave Chicago on the SFO Chief(#1) at 3:15pm(CT),arrive Clovis NM at 12:15pm(MT),connecting to the Carlsbad passenger local(#25)at 1:45pm,arrive at Carlsbad at 6:00pm,connecting with #45,the tri-weekly mixed train to Pecos Tx arriving at Pecos at 1:00 am! The return trip back starts at 2:00am(#46)at Pecos Tx,arriving at Carlsbad at 6:45am,connecting with the passenger local to Clovis (#26)leaving at 8:45am,arriving at Clovis at 1:00pm,connecting to the SFO Chief(#2)at 4:00pm(MT)arriving at Chicago Il at 2:00pm(CT) The timing of the mixed depended on how much work(switching) was done enroute,Pecos Tx was a "backdoor"(minor)interchange for ATSF back then,Pecos to the Tx/NM state line was pulled up about the late'70's-early '80's Sourced from the "Ticket Agent Edition" of 10/25/59 to 01/15/60 ATSF system timetables folder
