I bought some horizon cars to make the Waterbury train from the early 90s to run with my fl9. Does anyone know how to apply the window band decals over the window openings? Also what color should the car body be? I'm thinking of acrylic iridescent pearl from Michaels craft store.

The Horizen body shell is also known as the Comet II/Shoreliner I. Is your plan to paint them in ConnDOT scheme or Metro North scheme? ConnDOT is the red window band,Metro North is the blue window band, Island Model Works has Decals for both schemes. As I remember the base color is silver(aka platinum mist) on the coaches and cab cars. Suggest you install a KD-118 "shelf" coupler on the "B"(brakewheel)end of the car if you intend to run as a "Push-Pull" set.
Welcome to the board!

I plan to paint the cars in cdot red circa 1992 when that consist started running. Is it better to paint the strip around the window band or use the decal? My concern with the decal is that it would crack while cutting out the window openings.

It will hard to match ConnDOT/New Haven red, after pulling the "glass" out, would paint the window band. If you go the decal route, use solvaset to get it to settle over fine details, and a fresh(new)X-acto blade to cut the decal at the window openings(again, pulling the "glass" out of the way.) If you are working with a "undec" or kit bodyshell, install the "glass" after all the paint and finish work is done.

I would agree that paint is easier to work with than large decals. I almost always do striping with paint. If you did the decals, backshophoss's method will work pretty well, especially if you add more Solvaset or MicroSol after you cut the window openings. Just make sure to get everything set in place and dry before cutting the window openings, and brush a little MicroSet over the window openings before cutting. If you need more tips on masking and painting to do something like the large stripes, I posted a tutorial here: www.protomodeler.com/index.php?/topic/912-masking-for-painting/

Im thinking of using aztek pearl paint for the cars. I tried true color paint on another project and it peeled. Anybody ever worked with aztek paint?

You might find a red close enough to match in the Testors car(automotive model) colors paint line, and the "house of color"(automotive model) paint line. A "HEADS UP" these are solvent based paints. True color uses their own version of "thinner",if you used anything else, might get poor results

I used their thinner, then I went to paint another color. When I removed the masking, it peeled the paint. I think testors aztek pearl should be ok along with testors red.
