For anyone who models the Southern Pacific commuter operations up until the 80s takeover by caltrain, Athearn has finally produced it and are showing pictures of their future GP40P-2 over on the book. Steam Gen, short fuel tank, flared radiator and all. They also stated that it is not the big announcement(supposedly the SDP40F) for the National Train Show.

SP had 3 of them.SP 3197-3199 that were used for commute service, and "Biz" car moves, shared the SFO-San Jose duties with SP 3200-3209 SDP45's and some unrebuilt GP-9's They all worked with Amtrak trains back in the "Rainbow Era". The 3000 class FM Trainmasters with the oversized numberboards(as done by Athearn)were the most remembered SFO commute motive power.
SP retained the practice of putting the train # in the numderboards long after most RR's stopped.

Does anyone know off the top of their heads what the critical dimensional differences would be between the GP40P-2 and a CNJ GP40P?
I'm thinking either suitable stand-in with detail changes, or good foundation for an accurate model...but I don't have the data and haven't stared at the pics yet.

The SP trio had smaller fuel/water tanks, the GP40P's were spec'ed for the B&O when built(was a condition to get $$$$$ to build the units,in case CNJ went "belly up") Believe the underframes on GP40P was based on a SD35 underframe, allowed the steam generator and lighting generator to fit on the frame.

At a glance, here's what I can see:
1) remove safety chain from rear handrail (varies by unit, apparently) 2) replace Blomberg M with Blomberg B (extra parts from Athearn...also need to change journals per photos, using the unobtainable DA parts) 3) move exhaust stack for steam generator to center of hatch 4) Fill sight glass 5) Replace subbase, cab, and nose from Cannon to get rid of worst SP-ification 6) Relocate marker lights and add rear numberboards (Etching?) 7) Move bell 8) Presumably, remove ribs from blower duct 9) Add correct pilots to front and rear 10)Add cab signal box 11) Add larger fuel and water tanks...could be kitbashed from extra Athearn tank 12) Remove extended-range dynamic brake segment from left side 13) Change radio antenna
Per drawings posted over on the atlasrescueforum, the GP40P and P-2 are the same length, so the 40P-2 will work to give us what we've all lusted after.
I think I'll roll the dice and not pre-order. My guess is this one will get overproduced because it's SP, and hopefully I'll be able to find one on the 'bay.

Slowfreight, the "critics" over at that other board are ripping into athearn on the production model of the GP40P-2 now on store shelves! Granted it's part of the Genesis line, but, was the mold that screwed up? Having been thru Ca many times, the grey does fade to light side is about right

Mine is first production run, so I'll have to take a look. But to be honest, I'm wiping out most of what they complain about. I'm still frosty that Athearn had the nerve to say NJT is too regional to produce. Fleet of 13 vs. fleet of 3. Whatever, Athearn.

There must be some SP Buffs on staff at Athearn/Horizon,and conceded NJT to Atlas. Go figure!
The Roundhouse Harriman cars are "shorties" (60 ft) There was a run these cars announced not that long ago, but not yet in stores. Wonder if that run was canned or "pushed back" a bit.

Too regional ha! Yet a distinct fleet of three isn’t? At least you’d get more runs out of the NJDOT units. Athearn is so biased to the West coast it’s not even funny.

You could blame CSX for a lot of that bias, they control a lot of fallen flag Eastern RR trademarks and logos. NS also has a lot of control as well, but has played well with Athearn and other manufacturers too. Amtrak is very protective of their logos and trademarks,as are the commuter operators on the east coast.
