Does anybody on the board have the 1st run FP45 that was "passed off" as a SDP40F in phase I scheme? This was the "Blue Box"era at it's height.

Notice CAD shows Phase I nose, when we've all been begging for the more-common Phase II nose.
Since I don't have any Amtrak steam-heat passenger cars right now, I'll have to think long and hard before buying any of these unless I happen to be sitting really flush when they come out.
Does anyone have suggestions for shorter trains that would have been pulled by SDP40F's?

That would definitely be short! Any idea what the cars were?
Wonder what I can find in the midwest....

I'll have to look at the books when I get home tonight. If you want to, um, combine your interests and create this mini "Builder," I found this on a search:

OMG, I can't wait! If someone announced the ACS-64 next, I will be taking out a payday loan next year....lol.
I hope the SDP40F in Phase II will also be included in this release, but I'll happily settle for Phase I if that's the only paint scheme to be announced.
Now is the time for Walthers to re-release the Amtrak Budd cars, but this time with a plated finish.
Needless to say, I'm going to start grabbing those old Budd cars as they become available.
Not too many older Amtrak locomotives left to produce....P30CH next?

I'm really happy to see this announcement. I have no need whatsoever for one, but I'm always glad to see more iconic and essential pieces of passenger equipment being produced. This has been a huge missing link for you early Amtrak guys, so enjoy!

timberley, I'm with you. I have absolutely no need of one, but sometimes it's still worth working it into the roster for fun. I have what I call my "second fleet" of trains that I've always wanted but don't fit in the theme of my layout. Some are more accurate than others, but include
-GO Transit bilevel train with 2 engines and a power car -VIA LRC -Jersey Builder -NJT Comet/U34CH -Amtrak Northstar
Maybe it will have to include an SDP40F-powered train. But fer shur, I'm up for a Pooch because they were everywhere in the midwest during the 1970s.

Yes. Actually had one and gave it to my wife's cousin a few years ago. My mother bought it for me waaaay back around 1976. It was a standard Athearn BB FP45 in Amtrak's "Pointless Arrow" scheme. I was at the learning stages of prototype railroading at that time, so I didn't even know what an "SDP40F" was. Does anybody on the board have the 1st run FP45 that was "passed off" as a SDP40F in phase I scheme? This was the "Blue Box"era at its height.

The SDP40F was "cursed" with the"not so great" track standards of that time period, the same C truck design, slightly modified wound up under 1000's of SD40-2's. Remember,Amtrak bought these units, along with the P30CH, and the E60CH as convertable back to freight service if NRPC(Amtrak)went "belly up"
The SDP40F was rigged for HEP,but never converted,as a "what if" you could remove the steam generator details, then install a fan and exhaust stack on a unit converted to HEP.

In reality, they couldn't ever be rigged for HEP..the cabling wasn't up to spec. Oops. You can run them with an F40 in phase III and Superliners (such consists did happen, with the SDP leading).
The CAD illustrations shows both Amtrak noses, actually. The smaller, inset photo shows the phase II model.
The F40C has HEP, and would be a fairly straight forward bash...

That HEP wiring was based on an earlier spec,Before the F40ph was built, but the option was there to swap the steam gennies for a Gen-set in the design
