Finally got some stuff done and off the deadline,P40 838 a phII with the factory fade(as done at GE Erie), but have a question about the special lettering added to this unit. Was this added for a political campaign or some sort of "Public Service" message,or an Employment drive?? Right side of Amtrak 838 Attachments:

This came up on the facebook group.
It was actually on Bill Clinton's 1996 re-election campaign. A member posted a video of the train and engine in question.
Interestingly this was in Athearn's first run of AMD-103s

Interesting, was 838 the lead unit on this train? The first run has sideframe pins that break easy, had to get a replacement sideframe kit for it, the only change was painting them a dark grey like the ph V's The other drawback was the cast in coupler pockets on the underframe, had to paint them to insulate multi-unit lashups.

It was unit 3 of 3 P40s. The rooftops of the Superliners on the train also spelled out a message, which I cannot remember. www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJqtxrI-klk

Thanks for that link, from what I see on the video, the Superliners were in ph IV,there were some campaign slogans taped to the cars at stripe level(half way up the car side) Note the 2 HW cars on the end with the speakers mounted on the Obs roof. the other 2 P-40's had posters taped to the sides.
Wonder if this model was a special run at Athearn?
From another video,AMTK 817 was leader,825 was 2nd out(back to back with 817)838 was 3rd out, 817 and 825 had poster signs applied.
Pilot train had 3 F40ph's on the head end and a theater car with the markers, the followup train had a pair of CSX freight units and CSX Biz Fleet Cars

No special run. Just another road number and variant on paint scheme, much like the upcoming "The Big Game" phase V variant.
