Does anyone know of any technical drawings of the MBTA BTC-3 coaches? I'm modeling the Boston area in HO scale, and I want to try scratchbuilding a BTC-3 using 3d printed parts. I have taken pictures of the prototypes, but reference images can only go so far.
Thanks!

Fascinating. Never heard of these until you brought it up. I saw Astrosa's post on it on the Atlas forum, but prefer to hang out here where there's no negativity...
Can you tell us anything about the history of how an aerospace company got talked into building a passenger car?

This might seem a "dumb question",are the"BTC" cars a BBD Comet/Horizen variant,or the German MBB's that are winding up stored at Seaview on the Mass Coastal RR as they fail??

With regards to Slowfreight, Frankly, I have no idea how or why Messerschmitt-Bolkow-Blohm GmbH (MBB) got into the American railcar market. My understanding is in the 1980's the MBTA wanted to expand their commuter fleet. MBB and Bombardier submitted bids, and MBB won the contract.
To Backshophoss, In MBTA fleet designations, BTC and CTC mean blind trailing car and control trailing car, respectively. So currently, the MBTA has BTCs and CTCs from Bombardier, MBB, Hyundai Rotem, and Kawasaki. The BBD cars are designated BTC-1 (CTC-1), MBBs are BTC-3 (CTC-3), Kawasaki are BTC-4 (CTC-4), Hyundai Rotem are BTC-4D and CTC-5. The designations also have extra letters following the number to denote rebuilds and different deliveries. As of recently, MBBs are being taken out of service as newer Rotem cars are introduced.
These MBBs are rather interesting specimens. They do have a pretty comfortable ride (for commuter trains), and I've always loved the slightly European look amongst F40phs and BBD cars.

Hi everyone, I just noticed that SlowFreight had sent me a private message on the Atlas Rescue Forum suggesting that I join here. If there's more interest in the MBTA here, I'm all for it! I'm re-posting the drawings that I had originally posted over there as well. I haven't done any work on these cars lately, other than doing a little test-fitting of the sides that I had laser-cut. I still have to figure out how to do the ends, and that's where 3D printing is probably a much better option.

astrosa,Welcome to the board, this is modeling that the board is interested in. You might be able to use Shapeways to "prototype" the car ends. We have 1 member that uses Shapeways on a regular basis, ihphobbymike, who has done parts and models of SEPTA equipment thru them.
