Have started on a pair of Function only Decoder installs,1 is an athearn dummy F-7A into a Power Pack type Cab for push/pull service, the other is an AHM Dummy E-8A painted in Amtrak ph I. Both are getting working Headlights, the E-8 might get a "soundbug" decoder since there's room for it. For the "Power Pack" removed the plastic wheelsets/bearings used on dummy models, and replaced them with metal wheelsets from the spare parts on hand(was able to reuse cracked axle gears for this project) The E-8 is stuck (for now) with factory "pizza cutter" wheelsets until a replacement set of NWSL 42" wheelsets arrive at the shop.

On the Power Pack, remove the sideframes before soldering wires to the metal sides of the gear tower, this applies to the current inside bearing version of the Athearn trucks, the "Dummy" trucks lack the "L" that reaches the strap used on pure DC models. Clean the metal "side" for a good solder joint. The wire is routed thru a rivet then soldered on the metal "side",use a heat sink (Hemostat)so as not to distort the plastic tower. Attachments:
