Believe all major decoders have been represented here. IF other, please message as to manufacturer and website. Thanks in advance! Note:MRC Decoders were the factory installed by Athearn for a time. Both regular and sound decoders

Only a few of my locomotives are DCC decoder equipped. Three P2K E-units have Digitrax 163s and my Genesis SD45-2 is equipped with a Lok Sound V3 series sound decoder set up. All were installed by Carl of DCC Geek. I plan on installing decoders on all of my locomotives. Approximately 10 units will have sound; most likely LokSound and QSI titan.

It may seem "scary" at first,to convert a fleet over to DCC,start with simple converts at first, and work your way up to the more difficult conversions and sound. In some cases, you might be better off having it done by a pro. Proto 2K and most Athearn "Blue Box" are easy to convert, just make sure that the motor is isolated from the frame. For athearn units, try to get the newer(RTR)motor mounts that are held in with a couple of screws on each side.(cat # ATH84028,good for 2 motors, order thru your hobby shop or from Horizen direct) Most "plug n play" models are 8-pin or 9 pin (JST) plugs, just plug in and GO.

I've generally had the most luck with TCS and NCE decoders. Digitrax can really be hit or miss. With the TCS decoders, you can't go wrong, as they have a "fool proof" replacement policy.

For me I mainly stick with NCE decoders and started using TCS decoders for locos that require 6 functions on a board type decoder. After my recent install of the ESU Loksound P42 decoder I will never use a Soundtraxx GE decoder, EMD maybe but I love the motor control of the ESU and it beats anything I have seen for realism.

Most of the major Decoder brands seem to have a "No quible" type of warrenty now a days, have had 2 decoders go bad,but Digitrax replaced them-no questions asked.

One thing I'm glad about is that the new QSI "Titan Emulators" and Lok Sounds V4 series are living up to expectations. The new sound schemes that are available are a nice improvement over the previous schemes, some that have been around since the mid 2000s. Finally, Soundtraxx Tsunami has some real competition as far as sound scheme quality.

Soundtraxx is coming out with the soundcar decoder... check out the site. This looks very promising. I have been waiting for a manufacturer to release a product like this.
