While Amtrak would rather have "Protect" units at certain crew bases,the P 40/42's are battle weary,at times Amtrak "borrows"
power from Host RR's to get the train to at least a major station,or the terminal station if possible.
The one given is that 1 P 40/42 can still supply HEP to the train.
Whatever is available close to where Amtrak stalled out,could be a lowly roadswitcher from the local freight to
the newest power swiped off an intermodal train.
In the now rare case of detouring over a route setup for PTC,an host RR unit gets tacked on the head end
to work with the PTC setup used by that Host RR.
