This is something I'm been brooding about for a bit,Roadswitchers, switchers and the Hybrid type locos that exist as supporting players in passenger and commuter service. May it be on Work trains, relief service(towing in a disabled train),basic switching in the yards/terminals, or moving equipment between yards as needed. Consider the P-32 BWH and NJT's GP-40P's as "front line" passenger/commuter power. Amtrak's GP-38-H3's(ex GOT GP40-TC's),the NJT GP-40P's that were reconfigured after the HEP genset was removed back to roadswitchers,LIRR MP-15's,MN's GP35R's,Amtraks's various MP and SW type switchers and Septa's collection of Hybrids. MN's Brookville switchers that wander around in GCT fit as support players,Am on the fence on MN's and ConnDOT's Brookville BL20's for now.

The only known genset/hybrid model available is the Atlas "Trainman",with a MBTA version recently announced. SEPTA's new hybrid switcher "SPAX 80" seems to be based on a GP type underframe with a Switcher type "End" Cab, described as a "modern" design RS-3,built by Knoxville Locomotive Works. This might be one heck of a "Kitbash" using a Athearn,Atlas,or walters P2K GP underframe and drive, then using sheet stock and detail parts from Details West,Cannon & Co,Smokey Valley, and whatever you have already stored away in the junk parts "bin". So reusing a switcher or GP based Cab is OK.

LIRR has put out a RFP for Tier IV Roadswitcher type Locos for Work and "tow truck" duties, most likely on recycled "Geep" underframes from GP 35's or 38's,as used by the NY&A's PR20B's on Blomberg "B" trucks no less. Not sure if any will be set up with HEP Gensets, that could be handy if a DM or DE Craps out. These units when built will arrive in a "new" paint based on the "wave" scheme used on the GP 38-2's using NY state colors. For now will refer to it as the "Empire wave" scheme.
