After buying and working on a a pair of Ex GOT(Metrolynx)F59's,Metra has gone ahead with buying a batch of F59phi's from Amtrak.
Unknown if they are from the Amtrak-Ca pool or the Cascade Service pool,as both are finally putting their SC-44's online.
The only known info is they could start wandering into Chicago late spring/early summer,also if the units will make a stop
at Progress Rail(Cat/EMD) for shop work before Metra gets them.

The other day, # 3 had dead in tow AMTK-Ca 456 3rd out,believed to be sold to METRA.
There's been word that the Coaster service out of San Diego has ordered 5 SC-44 Chargers,and plans to retire 5 F-40ph-C's.
ACE service has also ordered 4 SC-44's for service expansion in the Tracy-Modesto metro areas

I'm not sure on which shop serves as METRA's main shop,the former "Rocket House" at La Salle st seems to be where METRA units get sent to outside contract shops for rebuild and returned to. Or are sent to the former CB&Q "Zephyr House" near CUS and the Amtrak yard complex. Consider the ex-CB&Q,now BNSF,and the former C&NW,now UP as separate host RR "fiefdoms" under METRA's umbrella.  |

METRA is going to get 15 used SD-70MAC's and Progress Rail will turn them into SD-70MACH's for METRA Service. They have an option for 27 more. Between this and the 24 ex-Amtrak-Ca and ex-Cascade F59phi's should allow the retirement of the oldest F-40 "shop queens" across the fleet. metrarail.com/aboutmetra/newsroom for details |

EMD is dead. All the branding on these has been Progress Rail, not EMD.
Interesting that the F40 fleet is largely older than the E and F fleet that it replaced, but is performing better overall. My guess is that the fleet just gets better maintenance under Metra than the old host railroads would have done.

The F-40's and the "Winnie's are the last of the Crankshaft driven HEP's,METRA pitched the inverters on the MP-36's for cat powered Gen-sets.
Believe the SD-70MACH's will be gen-set HEP,all the F-59's are gen-set HEP.
Edgecrusher: METRA is tweaking the Amtrak-Ca "Surfliner" scheme to reflect METRA ownership,the ex-Cascades service F-59's
will get this paint scheme as well.

MP36 came in two flavors, MP36-C and MP36-S. The C version has a generator set. The S version does not. Metra bought the S version, with a shaft-mounted static invertor.

METRA was unhappy with the prime mover wear and tear on the MP-36's,so they yanked out the inverter and put in the gen-set pallet.
Boise(MPI) did the first MP-36 conversion,METRA did the rest "in house".

I've seen some pics of F59s, they don't look too bad. Call me old fashioned, but an SD-70 is no passenger unit. I was kinda hoping they'd continue with more heritage units. But I think anything else that I'd like to see would have licensing issues.
