Finally got the 2 Amfleet I's down to the setup, the Factory did not "lube" the wheelsets, after checking for defects(Found none) used the LaBelle thin oil(# 108)on all 8 bearing blocks, then manually spun the wheelsets to get oil spread around the bearing block and axle shaft, did the same to the other car. Than setup a P-42 and a Dummy NPCU(Lifelike F40ph dumnmy)and the cars, and sent it out as a Deadhead Equipment move and let that set do laps for a few hours in one direction, then re-oiled the bearings and set the cars B-end leading back on the track ,and run laps for a few hours again. Cars now rolling in opposite direction,at the end of the day the 2 cars did roll better than when they were fresh out of the box.

Hoss, be sure to check the plastic tubular bolster periodically which holds the wheels in place. I've had to send all my wheelsets back to Walthers for warranty replacements when the Amfleets first came out because those bolster would crack after a period of time.
And, again this past week, I had to replace a few wheelsets after the wheels spun out onto my layout.
Very poor design. I almost wish they would have stayed with the old design on the original Amfleets.

Was working on improving the rolling quality on some Walthers Proto Amfleets and came across this issue a broken bearing block housing (bottom piece in the photo) and not really visible in the picture but plastic axle is warped so the wheel won't sit straight. Will need to get a replacement truck from Walthers.

Will need to get a replacement truck from Walthers. That's one of the common problem with these cars. The first set of Amfleets I bought in Phase III had the broken bearing blocks in the box, as well as missing brake shoes. I'll alert you to another common problem....Make sure to check for hairline cracks along the length of the plastic axle. In some cases, the metal wheels are so tightly placed into those plastic axles, they start to crack down the seams. And if your not careful when you reassemble the wheelsets back together, that plastic holder with the four flimsy leads on the ends break very easily.

You might be better off to pick up a lenght of Plastruct or Evergreen tubing, and make your own replacement axle tube, shades of the cracked axle problem that plagued the P2K models.
