I have heard several rumors that these Shapeways models degrade or disintergrate in a few years. Does anyone know if there is any truth to that??
I know of three people who were using them to make small conversions and stopped, since, after a discussion with the manufacturer of the material used in the process, told them it does not stand up well and will degrade over a few year period.
They used it for a basic shape, then added fine details (something Shapeways can't seem to do), then cast the conversions in resin.

Thats the same thing I heard which confirmed my speculations with the 3d printed models. I guess the best thing to do will be make a master and use it for resin copies.

I heard that too.
Since 3D printing is an emerging technology, in a few years hopefully they will have a better product that doesn't disintegrate, can print finer details, and will be cheaper.

I was told this as well. Since the material is cured using UV light, you should keep it out of such direct light. Models that are primed and painted haven't shown any problem to my knowledge. Some 3D parts will warp if unsupported and the material is brittle so handle it carefully. However, the materials and processes are getting better all the time, so this may all be addressed in the near future. Mike Bartel IHP ihphobby.tripod.com

Btw Mike, besides the Shapeways issues the CAD model for the AEM-7 that you drew up looks great! I don't model N scale, but if I did I would be happy to finally have a good option for the AEM-7.

Thanks Daniel, the CAD for the next N scale Shapeways product is underway now! Mike Bartel IHP ihphobby.tripod.com
