I spent a great deal of time - probably too much trying to get things to look and feel right. Here's a photo from that journey with an F40 and Amfleet cars depicting what the scene would look like. Attachments:

RailThunder,
Amazing as I have photos of an almost identical set up. Back in 1980, Amtrak parked an F40PH coupled to 3 brand new Amfleet II cars at Tampa Union Station. I took photos of it. This train sat there for about a week ( I think). At that time, the NY to Florida trains were still running with the steam heated Heritage Budd and Pullman Standard cars hauled by SDP40fs.
My first reaction,"So this is what Amfleet IIs look like" as I noticed the slightly larger windows. That was an exciting time period for me, although I didn't like it when the giant SDPs were removed and replaced by what I considered the "clunky looking" F40s (which grew on me eventually).

Amtrak's Florida(silver) service became the home for the not well liked P-30ch fleet, was ment to be used between New Haven-Boston S. Station on the NEC. With SCL(CSX)happier with GE's products than EMD,they were moved to the Florida services and Auto Train after Amtrak's takeover

Appearance-wise, imho, the "Pooches" were very attractive looking units. Basically modified U30C chassis and powerplant. A shame that they had some problems that annoyed mechanics. Although the east coast Pooches were assigned to the Auto Train, occasionally a unit would "pinch hit" on the Silver Star or Silver Meteor as well. I'd get an HO version if produced. Believe "American GK" did the P30ch way back (mid-late 80's) and was offered thru Walters, not sure if it was just a body shell,or a complete loco. The only other "home" was the pre-extended Sunset Ltd,#1+#2,NOL to LAUPT.

I remember Walthers advertising the P30CH in either the 1979 or 80 catalog. But I don't think it was produced other than the sample models. Here's one at Tampa Union Station leading the Silver Meteor. www.flickr.com/photos/alcomike/7297303406/lightbox/This is likely one of the Auto Train units pinch hitting to help out an ailing F40. If I'm not mistaken, the culprits on the F40s were usually traction motors. According to Amtrak personnel that I spoke with, Amtrak had a tendency to delay or "defer maintenance" on locomotive components that were not critical to safety. The east coast F40s took a lot of punishment and it was not unusual to see a Seaboard Coast Line GP40 or U18B coupled in front of a northbound Florida to NY Amtrak train.
