In the May 2013 issue of MR there was a great article by Matt Snell titled "Build a contemporary business car". It was about kitbashing Conrail’s prototype car no. 5. Of course this got me thinking about building HO scale versions of Amtrak's business cars. I'm a real big fan of Amtrak's special cars. If you check out my YouTube page (www.youtube.com/acelaphillies) you can find videos of the different cars that I have caught.
So my question is, has anyone here ever built any of Amtrak's special cars? Or have you ever even seen any of them modeled? Most would require body work and they would all need custom decals.
In my opinion these are the cars you could do in order of least difficult to most difficult:
1. 10003 - this would be the easiest. It would require no body modifications. You would need a Bachmann Acela End-Business coach and then you would have to remove the numbering. Then you would need custom 10003 decals as well as a few other decals.
2. 9800- this one I have actually seen modeled by Kyle Nembhard (mlrr). Here is the link: www.5wwwww5.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=193&mforum=marylindsayrr . This would require some filling in windows, unless you purchased a new $$$ Walthers version to mess with. It would also require some mods on the front end along with a new paint job and custom decals.
3. 10002- this car would require lots of body work such as, filling in windows and doors and making new windows. It would also require lots of details such as camera, the pantograph, etc. Not to mention underbody details. It would also need a paint job and custom decals.
4. 10001- for this you would have to make so any mods. You would have to do a TON of work for the correct window arrangement. Not to mention scratchbuilding the entire observation platform on the back. Plus paint and custom decals.
Has anyone else given thought to modeling these cars?
