From Model Railroad News,Sept 2013,pg16, At the NMRA National Convention in Atlanta Ga this year, Bachmann Announced and showed a body shell of a 650 series GP-40 in phase III,used as boosters with the F40's around the time of GE's awarded the P-40 contract, before the arrival of the P-32-BWH's The GP-40's were leased units, had pass thru HEP and Comm Cables, may have worked as work train power in Ca when Amtrak had the Metrolink contract.

Nice move by Bachmann although I wonder how does the shell compare to Proto 2000 and Athearn RTR EMD hood shells? Is this going to be a "Spectrum" series unit?

I hoping it a Spectrum type,it would go long nicely with my 2 Spectrum F-40's,the kicker is the strobes on them, they are tied into the headlight board.

Atlas has done GP-40's,may have been NJT's version(GP-40P) The only mods Amtrak did were HEP pass thru and Door comm(blue) pass thru.

This month's"Model Railroad News"(Sept'15)pg 32 has a review of Bachmann's GP40 in Amtrak ph III, included in the review is a quick review of a 8-pin EZ-Command DCC Decoder with a 1 amp rating. While not quite Spectrum level,it should work well with the Bachmann Spectrum F40ph,and at times were lead units,if there were no restrictions(ATS gear or Cab Signals,or Host RR objections) The 650-664 Gp40's would have been used as yard switchers and "Go Fetch" relief power for a disabled train, when not used as a "B" unit between "tired" pair of F40ph's.
Current MSRP,GP40 $85.00,EZ-Command decoder $50.00
