tmurray,Thank you and welcome to the forum. Believe Amtrak learned early that silver trucks were a maintance cost to be rid of. ATSF was very picky about their image for the Chief and Super Chief,it was not unusal for them to clean/repaint the trucks when a set turned at Chicago/Los Angeles. Including sleepers interchanged from Eastern RR's. Now I can repaint all of my Viewliner I trucks black except for 1,that I will leave silver. (the 1 car the shop forgot about!)

Tmurray is correct here (PS welcome to the forum!) I believe ATSF also did a mid-route wash in Albuquerque as well. Got around to painting my View I sleeper trucks black with polly-s engine black, did the Bolster anchor rods as well. Here's the before pics Attachments:
