Hello all! While I find time to start this project AND get the final shots of the Amfleet cars, I figured I would at least list what I have going for this project:
My Superliner modeling is narrowed down to the Capitol Limited, #29 and #30 which run from Washington, DC to Chicago via Pittsburgh and Cleveland. As many of you know, the fleet now stands with Superliner I and II equipment which is intermixed. That being said, it seems that the "Capitol" seems to run with more S-I coaches, more S-II Diner and Lounges and either S-I or S-II sleepers (i am going by what I have ridden over 50+ times on this route.)
Hence my consist will be as follows:
Superliner II Transition Sleeper
Superliner II Sleeper
Superliner I Sleeper
Superliner II Dining Car
Superliner II Lounge
Superliner I Coach
Superliner I Coach-Baggage
Superliner I Coach
As with the Amfleets, interiors being painted will be a natural. For the S-II Sleeper, I will have it done with that light lavender/grey interior. The S-I will have the completely refurbished (wood grain/blue interior)
The Dining car I haven't decided whether to do it in the refurbished blue decor or the orig maroon/burgundy interior. Does anyone know if that color scheme is still in service or have they all been redone into the new blue interior?

The Sightseer Lounge will be done as they are now WITH tables at one end (Dremel time boys!) Also, the default lounge seats are too tall, that will be corrected.
The Coaches will be..... typical coaches with the blue interior.
Okay, now what is relieving is that the Superliners don't have underbody detail (minus the wheels and trucks) since they are skirted so I am ELATED that I do not have to detail battery boxes with little itty bitty details, custom decals and warning placards.
The celebration was short-lived.
What the Superliners lack in underbody, they more than make up for with a double-decker layout to now be painted and detailed, not to mention the sleepers will have the biggest time dedicated to them.

Differences between the 1st run of plated Superliners to the "new" Proto Superliner cars....
In a nutshell, not a whole lot. The window tint is MUCH darker than before and they do have gasket detail. Also the end car grab irons are now installed as they were missed on the first run. The plating is a slightly different finish as well (slightly duller, but not as dull as I would like it to be.) That doesn't bother me because once I dulled down the Amfleets, I was more than happy with the result. Walthers just basically did some minor updates so they could re-release the Superliner series in the Proto line. I feel that if it was a true "from the ground up" model, you would have seen better details (wire stirrup steps, etc.) But overall, the model IS good.
One thing that irks me to NO END is the Superliner I end doors.

See where I am going with this? Walthers overlooked the fact that they modeled Superliner II end doors on a Superliner I model. Ugh okay, you miss it the first time, okay, THEN you miss it with the 1st run of plated cars...grrrrr. THEN you miss (ignore) it with the Proto series cars??? Okay I know why they let it go but still.....
With the Superliner I Coaches bringing up the rear of the Capitol Limited, I will have to do something with that door (yea this will be fun, stay tuned!) Besides I HATE that Dang molded on safety bar!
Lighting..... I am not using any of the Walthers factory light boards....for I feel they are TOO bright. If that were the real world in 1/87, you could split atoms with that brightness!
Upon looking at a Superliner train at night, for the most part, it's pretty friggen dark. The lower level vestibule is brightly lit, along with a room dimly lit here and there. The coaches have their lights turned down low for passenger comfort. The Lounge as well. So I will have my work cut out for me there.
Since #29/30 pass through Pittsburgh at night (or very early in the morning), the Dining car is closed for the most part (on #30 you may be at the first breakfast when they open) so my Dining Car will feature the "ready for breakfast service" look. (tablecloths folded, silverware and menus put between seats. Perhaps a conductor sitting down at a table doing paperwork.) Sleepers will feature people...well... sleeping (or the "nighttime look") Yes, count on curtains as well.
Coaches will be populated with figures. Speaking of figures, I was never content with the realism level of HO scale figures. I understand they're small and hard to detail, but perhaps a light wash of india ink suggested by fantastic modeler Lance Mindheim (http://www.lancemindheim.com/blog.htm) as well as some other details will be in order. I wish some modern figures could be done (let's have the yuppie on their netbook modeled with earbuds in and get rid of the bald fat guy in the sky blue suit and red tie...yea you know the one i'm talking about!)
Transition Sleeper .... would it be wrong to have some of the crew downstairs chatting and smoking in the crew "lounge"?? Nah i'll keep it clean, but I HAVE been down there and seen what goes on! Maybe a card game modeled? AH keep it clean keep it clean haha.
I would have LOVED to do the brake indicator lights next to the doors as well as steplights and the little light in the diaphragm vestibule but can't be done. Back to reality...the S-I Coach end car will have the same high-level of detail as the rear Amfleet car, stay tuned for that picture.
Well as the Joker said....
