What area/corridor was the last stand for F-40ph's? Figured that the San Diegians and the Sunset Ltd(#'s 1 + 2) were the last stand. The last area they were daily used was the Springfield, MA to New Haven, CT shuttles. I plan to model the Boston Line with Springfield being the main focus point. So three or 4 shuttle sets and even the Vermonter would sometimes have F40's on it too so 1 or two for each Vermonter.

So having an Amtrak FL-9 or 2 cycling to/from New Haven shop would make sense, back then the Shop at Albany was only for the Rohr Tubros.

I only saw FL9's from CDOT when they headed for rebuild and a couple times the Amtrak FL9's showed up but they were rare. Most of the time they would go to NYC and head to NHV that way.

There's a video now up on Model Railroader's site of Jason visiting the MR&T to show off the upcoming Amtrak F40s. It does include some footage of one of the units running, showing off both the awesome HEP sounds and the P5 horns. Apparently there are two different P5 recordings, to allow for the variation in the sound of the horns over their lives (for people who don't like the P5, I'm sure there will be a K5LA on there! Heck, they even put one on the VIA version). One of the things I quite liked on the VIA units was that they had multiple versions of the K3L horn, so if you have a particular preference or multiple units that you want to sound slightly different as per the prototype, it's easy to do. You don't have to be a subscriber to view, but you may have to have a (free) account at trains.com: mrr.trains.com/videos/product-reviews/2015/01/video-rapido-trains-visits-model-railroader-magazine

The latest Rapido News went out to subscribers last night, and had two interesting things for Amtrak F40 fans. First of all, there was a proper production photo of the Amtrak F40PH: I'm not an Amtrak guy, but those sure look tempting! The other thing of interest was in their list of projects currently in tooling. Right at the bottom of that list was: "HO scale F40PH with ditch lights - just started". That's all we have for details, but it certainly confirms that they're doing more American F40s. Perhaps some commuter lines could fall in on those? Suppose it depends what version/phases they do next.

Amtrak's F40's were regulars on the "International" and the "Maple Leaf" into Toronto, from Chicago and Albany(GCT/NYP),wound up in Montreal after the Tubros were pulled off the Adrondack, and the "Pacific International" the Seattle-Vancouver train, before the Cascade service was started.

Unfortunately, all indications are that they won't be doing the only other Phase I fleet--the 28 units that went to RTA. So assuming I don't get burned on my preorder, I'll have to use my undec Amtrak unit and scrap out a Kato unit for the pilot and nose details. What I really want for an Amtrak unit would be an F40PHR ca. 1978. PhI units are too few and too unusual in my chosen areas. Maybe I'll have enough leftover parts from the scrapped Kato to make an early PhII unit if I find a good deal on an Amtrak model....

The F40PHR's used recycled parts from traded in SDP40F's,there was not any noticed changes to the bodyshell that stood out.

Has anyone picked up the Rapido F40PH yet? Any thoughts? I'm waiting for mine to come in the mail.

A friend of mine just got his F40 and ran it at the setup last saturday, sounded good out of the box, and ran all session with 3 Horizon coaches, dinette and a View I sleeper(all Walters). A little gear train noise on the first few laps, then quiet. Reminded me of the F40's based at New Haven, after spooling up to HEP mode.

I got my undec unit right before moving. It's DC only, so I couldn't play with sound anyway, but it's got great detail right out of the box. When I get unburied, I'll put it side by side with my Kato units for a comparison.

Since no one has posted it here yet, Rapido announced multiple new F40 variations over the weekend. No later phases (yet), but they're doing Phase 1-based NPCU "Cabbages", and modernized Phase 1 units with ditch lights and other modifications. That's in addition to the rebuilt VIA versions. rapidotrains.com/ho-amtrak-npcu/rapidotrains.com/ho-modernized-f40ph/

There is a Phase II with sound marked down that I'm strongly considering, but I just don't have the funds. It'd be nice to have a nice, reliable sound equipped Amtrak diesel. I think other than a P42DC and a few second hand Athearn FP45s, I don't really have any Amtrak diesels (All electric! way to many AEM7s....)
