Wonder if the "Getto Grates" will be offered as a seperate Part for MBTA versions? They were needed untill FRA came up with a "Bullet Proof" glass standard. Debris strikes were common back then!(Shopping carts were the favorate missiles, along with plenty of rocks{ammo})Ugh!

Man, that's a good looking couple of units! Almost as nice as the Canadian ones. *Almost*... :-P
A lot of people knew this announcement was coming, but good to finally see it out there officially. I have no doubt this will make a lot of Amtrak modellers very happy! THE definitive F40PH has finally arrived. :-)
I guess the only question now is to see how many variations Rapido will do, i.e. later phases? Other U.S. roads? Cabbages even? Who knows.

I'm getting two Phase III's. One step closer to my 80's Broadway Limited!!
If they do cabbage units, which I feel they may, then I'm in trouble lol.

The "getto grates" were a needed evil, the"youth" of the period thought trains were targets for rock throwing,Shopping carts were tossed(dropped)from bridges along with other types of urban debris(tires, car parts,trash,bricks,etc,etc....) Since the ROW passed thru certain decaying areas at that time.

"youth" in Philly and Baltimore still throw rocks trains along ROW, I've been on the receiving end several times within the past few years

I got my VIA F40s last week, and have been playing around with them since. Based on that, I can assure you Amtrak fans that these will be absolutely incredible! Worth every penny for sure. The level of detail is exquisite, and they operate just as realistically as they look. The lighting has been set up to work prototypially (all lights are independently controlled), and the sound is incredible too - including standby and run HEP modes. Actual operation of the model is very impressive too, really smooth. I'll write up a bit more of a review over on the Canada section of the forum soon, but for now I'll just say that if you're thinking about ordering the Amtrak versions: DO IT! You won't be disappointed.

Love it!! I also love how they authentically scream in HEP mode. Jason and the boys @ Rapido are amazing.

Reportly Rapido(Jason)may have added some strange sounds to the decoder in the canadian VIA F-40 thread, not sure if the same decoder is used on the Amtrak version, but might be something to check out Check in the higher fuctions from 13 upward

LOL I just ordered 6 of the Phase 3 east units and if they make the other phases I will get 2 of each for a total of 10 and that will be enough for my future layout lol. Now if walthers will make a Cab car to go with the new amfleets I will be happy. Luckily the main area I plan to model was one of the last places that Amtrak ran the F40's before retiring them so that will work out nicely, now if Rapido would make high quality P40/P42's along with the P32DC and commuter versions that would take care of pretty much everything I would need now that the FL9's are being made. LOL This year is going to be an expensive year from what I can tell.

What area/corridor was the last stand for F-40ph's? Figured that the San Diegians and the Sunset Ltd(#'s 1 + 2) were the last stand.

And it's bilingual, as required by law :-P
