Hello all, this thread will consist of future yearly name trains that Walthers introduces every year. Since the name train introduction in 2006, they have proven highly popular with modelers and each year the trains get better and better (factory installed grab irons, window gaskets, etc.)
So far, we have had:
2005-06: Santa Fe Super Chief 2006-07: Great Northern Empire Builder 2007-08: Milwaukee Road Twin Cities Hiawatha 2008a Milwaukee Road Twin Cities Hiawatha (in UP colors) 2008-09: New York Central 20th Century Limited 2009-10: Union Pacific Cities trains 2010-11: PRR Broadway Limited (1953 version) 2011a: Santa Fe Super Chief (plated version, new Regal 4-4-2 sleeper) 2011-12: C&O Pere Marquette 2012-13: Santa Fe El Capitan 2013-14: Santa Fe San Francisco Chief 2014-15: B&O Capitol Limited 2015-16: PRR Broadway Limited (1960's version)
The name trains are here to stay for some time. That being said, what would modelers like to see in the future? DISCLAIMER: This is NOT an official Walthers request, it will be forwarded to them. Now for the fun part (well 2nd fun part, as the trains themselves are the first fun part!) Please keep in mind that diesel-era trains from the 1950's-1960's are their main focus (so figure any train hauled by E or F units.)
There is a poll in here as you can see. Along with voting, please add to the thread as to why you would like this train. PLEASE keep the thread going with other trains you would like to see that I did not include in the poll.
Should you have any questions, please ask away! Tom

Somebody must have read my mind at Walthers. I'll be all in on D&H and EL. Not the Phoebe Snow announcement I thought was eventually coming but I'll be satisfied with having something EL on my layout.
My votes are Phoebe Snow, 1960's 20th Century, and the Southern Crescent.
Honorable mentions: I'd like to see the New Haven Merchant's Limited, the LIRR Cannonball, SAL Silver Meteor, GM&O Alton Limited (or the Gulf Coast Rebel) done.

I think Walthers read a lot of our minds for the Erie-Lackawanna. I already preordered the cars. Dying for E8's.
Ah GM&O. GOOD one.
Keep them coming!!

The Cannonball in the 60's had some of the ex-EL Phoebe Snow/Lake Cities cars till LIRR went to 600 VDC HEP and dumped the steam generators in the C420's and most of the MU fleet was replaced by the M-1's. Believe the last major "in house" project at Morris Park Backshop was MP72's/MP75's conversion to HEP coaches/Parlor cars used in the 70's-90's Cannonball under the MTA banner. (Some times refered to as the high tide, low tide, and red tide era, depending on where the blue/red stripe was placed. )

See that's excellent info right there!
Any love for any of the Rock Island "Rocket" trains?
PS I think odds are gold you will see a 1960's 20th Century Limited version. I would love for the New England States to be done as well (model Babbling Brook obs!)
PRR's General and Manhattan Limited would be good.

RI's after A-day service was a "patch together" operation that made PC "look good" The "Denver Rocket" split at Limon Co to 2 trains,a section to Denver, and a section to Colorado Sprngs. The PRR "Congo" was the all parlor car train between DC and NY Penn you did not mess with, that's what "Big Wigs" took when summoned to DC..... At www.walters.com there're now seperate web pages for the "Name Trains" and "Pike sized" passenger trains.

While Alco PA's/PB's were not quite as popular, they were "out there" EL,D+H,Nickel Plate,etc..... And were used on NYC,ATSF,DRGW,and other Roads as Power on Secondary trains,Mail/Express trains.

Here's one suggestion that's a little out there....what about a new release of Walthers' NYC IRT subway cars, but this time decorated in the 1964 World's Fair Colors as a name train? Or possibly do the CTA 2400 series subway cars in the 1976 Bicentennial colors to mark our country's 240th birthday?
Although I don't think Walthers might do these, MTH is getting ready to do HO Subway cars in the near future. But since these companies do repeat each other's work, maybe a thought should be given to do these.
A few more name trains to consider....
Lehigh Valley Asa Packer, PRR East Wind, L&N Humming Bird, C&NW "400", Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, D&RGW Prospector, CNJ Royal Blue, KCS Southern Belle

I wouldn't mind the CTA cars! Since Walthers already has NY Subway molds, it wouldn't be too hard for the World's Fair Colors.
The PRR East Wind I would say no (but LOVE your choice there) as with the upcoming P70 coaches as well as the Rapido Osgood-Bradley cars that exist.
NOW... the L&N Humming Bird / Pan American is something they may do. ANYTHING involving E or F units with a timeframe of mid 50's all the way to mid-late 60's is a VERY realistic possibility.
The C&NW 400 (Twin Cities 400) has been thrown around.
EXCELLENT choices Rails4dmv. Please keep them coming.
Further notes: Walthers will (in case you haven't noticed already) is turning towards high-quality passenger equipment.
Simple points to remember.... PASSENGER EQUIP SELLS Yearly name trains SELL! Santa Fe SELLS! PRR SELLS! NYC SELLS! Amtrak (as opposed to 10-20 years ago, with inaccurate cars and paint on Rivarossi cars....) SELLS now.
Mid 1950's-1960's passenger trains have a huge market, hence why you are seeing a 1960's era Broadway Limited. odds are GOOD you will see a 1960's 20th Century Limited.
What may happen is with all these 1950's-1960's consists...is for instance (and this is JUST an example)
JUST ANNOUNCED.... 1960's 20th Century Limited E7A Cigar Band scheme E8B Cigar Band scheme E7A Cigar Band scheme MB Baggage-mail car CSB Baggage-dorm NYC Coach NYC Coach Budd Grill-diner Sleepercoach 16-10 Sleepercoach 16-10 22-roomette (Harbor series) Kichen-Lounge car Dining (seating) car 10-6 Sleeper (River series) 12 double bedroom (Port series) Sleeper-Buffet-Lounge (Creek series)
Also introducing "Brook" series obs. cars so you can mix and match like the prototype as well sa form other famous trains such as the New England States.
As usual, if you want these trains, Let Walthers know! It only adds fuel to the fire!

Your absolutely right PRR sells. And slowly getting a look from modelers now is Penn Central (strange). I attribute that to be a generational jump.
I highly suspect it's going to be a toss-up between the 1960's NYC 20th Century, the SP Sunset Limited or one of the "Daylights".

You are also correct that Penn Central is selling a LOT more now. I concur that it is the newer (well older now ha ha) generation coming of age where PC is considered as old as NYC/PRR as far as modeling is concerned. Walthers would be wise to come out with more PC cars in the future. Kato was greatly surprised how much their PC passenger car sets sold.
Naturally a 1960's Broadway and 20th Century would make money for Walthers.... they're aware (which is why I said "expect a 1960's 20th Century Limited down the road"), I am trying to convince them to perhaps market a few different cars such as the Sleepercoaches (which lasted into Amtrak) and the Brook-series observation cars as well as some of the PRR cars (maybe the stainless steel twin-unit diner and some more unique cars) so you can accurately model their other trains (New England States, The General, The Admiral, Wolverine, etc...)
Any more ideas???
